Russian athletes: Ukrainian officials to boycott Paralympics

Ukrainian officials will boycott next month’s Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympic Games after the International Paralympic Committee approved the participation of a small group of Russian and Belarusian athletes under their national flags. Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi condemned the move as “outrageous”, arguing that allowing the symbols of countries waging war on Ukraine onto the Paralympic stage effectively endorses aggression and Kremlin propaganda. Under the IPC decision, six Russian and four Belarusian athletes will compete at the Games in Italy, marking the first time since the 2014 Sochi Paralympics that the Russian flag will be flown at a Paralympic event. Russia and Belarus had been largely excluded from international para sport following Moscow’s full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but member federations voted in September 2025 to lift their partial suspensions and restore full membership rights. Kyiv responded by […]

Geneva talks end without Ukraine deal

Talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States aimed at ending Moscow’s war in Ukraine have ended without a decisive breakthrough. The trilateral negotiations, held in Geneva, stretched late into Tuesday and resumed briefly on Wednesday for about two hours. Despite earlier optimism from US envoy Steve Witkoff, both the Russian and Ukrainian sides described the discussions as challenging. According to a Ukrainian diplomatic source, limited progress was achieved on certain military matters, including discussions on the current front line and mechanisms for monitoring a potential ceasefire. However, the core dispute over territory — central to any lasting truce — remains unresolved, with positions in Moscow and Kyiv still significantly apart. Russia continues to insist on full control of the Donbas region, encompassing Donetsk and Luhansk, a demand Kyiv considers unacceptable. Chief Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky acknowledged the difficulty of […]

Zelensky calls Putin ‘slave to war’ at Munich forum

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “slave to war” during a speech at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. He warned that Putin will remain a threat to Ukraine and Europe if he is not stopped on the battlefield. Zelensky said every power plant in Ukraine has been damaged by Russian strikes, leaving millions facing cuts to heating and electricity in winter. He spoke days before the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, which has killed hundreds of thousands, destroyed towns and cities, and forced millions of Ukrainians from their homes. He compared Putin to Adolf Hitler and said the Russian leader may see himself as a tsar but is trapped in his own war. Zelensky added that no one in Ukraine believes Putin will allow Ukrainians to live freely or end Moscow’s aggression voluntarily. […]

Russian strikes cut power and heat to thousands in Ukraine

Russia has launched a large overnight barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine, knocking out power, heat and water for tens of thousands of people in several major cities. Officials said the latest wave is part of an intensified winter campaign targeting the country’s energy infrastructure. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said around 3,500 apartment buildings were left without heating after critical facilities were hit. More than 100,000 families also lost electricity, with private energy firm DTEK confirming that one of its thermal power plants was struck. Two people were injured in the capital and a residential building was damaged. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles, one cruise missile and 219 drones during the attack. Air defences shot down or neutralised 16 missiles and 197 drones, but several still reached their targets, causing widespread outages. The […]

‘Only Trump can stop the war’: Ukraine FM pushes to speed up peace talks

Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha says Kyiv wants to speed up U.S. brokered peace talks with Russia, arguing that only U.S. President Donald Trump has the political weight to seal a final deal. In an interview in Kyiv, Sybiha said Ukraine and Russia must hold a face to face leaders’ summit to resolve the toughest remaining issues in a 20 point peace framework that has guided recent trilateral negotiations. He warned that campaigning for the U.S. mid term elections in November could soon distract Washington, so Ukraine is keen to “capitalise on momentum” in the talks. On core territorial questions, he said the sides remain far apart, with Russia demanding that Ukraine formally hand over the remaining 20% of Donetsk it has yet to occupy and Kyiv insisting on regaining control of all its land, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. US targets June deadline to end Ukraine war

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the United States is seeking to bring the war with Russia to an end by June, revealing that Washington has invited both Kyiv and Moscow to participate in talks on US soil next week. According to Zelensky, the proposal marks the first time the US has suggested direct negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in America. The talks are expected to take place in Miami, and Ukraine has already agreed to attend. At the time of reporting, neither Washington nor Moscow had publicly commented on the proposal. Since returning to office more than a year ago, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to end the conflict. Zelensky’s remarks come as diplomatic efforts continue alongside ongoing fighting on the ground. The Ukrainian leader was speaking after the conclusion of a second round […]

Zelenskiy says US wants Ukraine war ended by summer

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says the United States wants Russia and Ukraine to reach a deal to end the war before the start of this summer. He told reporters that after two days of US brokered talks with Russia in Abu Dhabi, Washington proposed holding another round of negotiations in Miami next week and Kyiv had agreed. Zelenskiy said US officials indicated they would likely pressure both sides to keep to a timetable shaped partly by US mid term election politics. He criticised overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine’s power grid and energy facilities, saying Moscow must be stopped from using winter cold as a weapon. According to him, Russia launched more than 400 drones and about 40 missiles in the latest barrage, leaving over 1,000 apartment buildings in Kyiv without heating as families sheltered in metro stations. Zelenskiy said Ukraine […]

Russian Intelligence General Shot in Moscow

A senior figure in Russia’s military intelligence has been seriously wounded after a shooting in Moscow, adding to a growing list of targeted attacks against high-ranking security officials since the start of the war in Ukraine. The victim, Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency, was shot several times inside a residential building on Volokolamsk Highway, in the north-west of the Russian capital. Russia open to new nuclear talks as treaty lapses

Russia says it still wants dialogue with the United States on limiting nuclear weapons, even as their last major arms control treaty, New START, expires without a replacement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow regretted the end of the treaty but remained prepared to talk if Washington gave a constructive response to President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to keep key limits for one more year. The plan would see both sides continue to respect caps on deployed strategic warheads, missiles and launchers even though the full treaty can no longer be legally extended. New START, signed in 2010 by then presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, was the final accord in a series of US Russia nuclear arms agreements dating back over 50 years to the Cold War. Besides capping arsenals, it allowed on site inspections that experts say built trust […]
