High Court rules FCCPC can probe customers’ complaints against banks, other financial institutions

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has the power to investigate consumers’ complaints against banks and other financial institutions. The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, dismissed a suit filed by United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, which had challenged the Commission’s jurisdiction in matters involving a commercial bank licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). UBA’s case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1972/2025, was thrown out in its entirety and the bank was fined N2 million for filing what the judge described as a frivolous and unmeritorious action. FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, hailed the judgment as “a big victory for bank customers,” saying it strengthens advocacy for consumer rights in the financial sector. In its statement signed by Corporate Affairs Director Ondaje Ijagwu, the Commission explained […]

United States senator Ted Cruz has alleged that some Nigerian government officials are complicit in attacks against Christians in the country. Cruz made the claim during a U.S. Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee hearing on Washington’s counterterrorism strategy in Africa, where he described Nigeria as the country with the highest number of Christians killed because of their faith. He said that since 2009, more than 50,000 Christians have been killed and over 20,000 churches, schools and other religious buildings destroyed. “Nigerian officials have been, unfortunately, complicit in facilitating these atrocities,” he told the hearing, linking part of the violence to the operation of Sharia law in some northern states and criticising what he called the slow response of Nigerian authorities to insecurity. Cruz recalled earlier meetings with Nigerian defence and security officials, saying they had promised to tackle the violence but […]

Stop fueling religious division, Muslim League tells foreign critics of Tinubu govt

A Muslim advocacy group, the Muslim League Unity Group, has warned foreign based actors against what it calls attempts to inflame religious tensions in Nigeria through misinformation and politically motivated narratives. In a statement jointly signed by Professors Ahmed Umar Daudu and Yunusa Bala Maikafi, the group accused some international Christian organisations, particularly in the United States, of circulating “doctored reports” about alleged persecution of Christians under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. It warned that such claims risk deepening distrust and unnecessary division among Nigerians who have historically lived together peacefully despite their different faiths. The group criticised recent comments attributed to United States Senator Ted Cruz, who was reported to have alleged attacks on Christian schools and places of worship by Muslims in Nigeria. It said the remarks form part of a broader agenda to incite division and promote […]

Nigeria’s food system fragile despite huge potential, FAO warns

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned that Nigeria’s food system remains fragile and under severe strain despite the country’s vast agricultural potential. Speaking at the 2026 Vanguard Economic Discourse in Lagos, FAO Representative in Nigeria Dominique Koffy Kouacou said climate shocks, conflict, high input costs and policy gaps are combining to undermine food production and access for millions of Nigerians. He noted that the situation is particularly dire for smallholder farmers, who face rising production costs at the same time as consumers confront soaring food prices. Kouacou recalled that recent food security assessments projected tens of millions of Nigerians could face high levels of food insecurity without sustained interventions, warning that the country’s agrifood system is “stressed and vulnerable” to further shocks. Despite these challenges, he stressed that Nigeria has no business being food insecure given its vast […]
