Ukraine’s Capital Kyiv Hit by Massive Missile Drone Attack

Article arrow_drop_down

Ukraine’s capital Kyiv was hit by a massive Russian missile and drone attack early Sunday, killing at least four people and injuring dozens more across the city.

Russia launched over 670 attack drones and 56 missiles against Ukraine overnight, including ballistic, aeroballistic and cruise missiles, with Kyiv remaining the primary target. Explosions reverberated through the city shortly after 1 a.m. local time, shortly after Ukraine’s air force warned that Russia might deploy its feared Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least three people were injured and several residential buildings were damaged across the city, with debris on fire at a school in the city center. Damage was recorded at more than 40 locations across Kyiv, including residential buildings, a dormitory, garages, a business center, Ukrposhta’s main office on Maidan, a market, a shopping mall, and the Lukianivka metro station.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Sunday that Russia had used the powerful nuclear-capable Oreshnik medium-range missile in its overnight attack, as well as the even more powerful Avangard hypersonic missile. The Oreshnik travels at more than 10 times the speed of sound and Putin has boasted it is nearly impossible to intercept.

Two people were killed and at least 56 others were injured as a result of the attacks, while damage was recorded at more than 40 locations across the city. Strikes were also reported in other parts of Ukraine, with a further two people killed and nine others injured in attacks on the broader Kyiv region, three people wounded in Cherkasy region and seven in Dnipropetrovsk region.

The intense assault shook buildings across the city center, including near government offices, residential buildings and schools, with smoke plumes rising above the city as fires burned following multiple impacts. Kyiv’s military administration said damage was recorded across at least nine districts of the capital.

The attack came after Zelensky warned on Saturday that Russia was preparing a strike using the Oreshnik missile, citing intelligence from Ukraine, the US and Europe. This marks one of the worst nights of the war for Kyiv, with Russia escalating its aerial offensive against Ukraine’s capital.

Trump Says Iran Deal Largely Negotiated Dispute Over Strait Reopening

US President Donald Trump has announced that a peace deal with Iran has been "largely negotiated" and that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened as part of the agreement, though Tehran has disputed the claim that control of the waterway will change. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States, the Islamic Republic of Iran and various other Middle East countries including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain and mediator Pakistan has been largely negotiated and is subject to finalisation. The deal reportedly includes provisional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days as a confidence-building measure, during which Iran would not charge tolls for ships transiting the waterway and would clear mines previously laid in the Hormuz Strait to allow free passage. In exchange, the US would […]

UK explores closer trade ties with the EU

The UK government has reportedly explored the possibility of creating a closer trading arrangement with the European Union, including discussions around a potential single market for goods as part of its broader post-Brexit reset strategy. According to sources familiar with the discussions, British officials raised the idea during recent contacts with EU representatives. However, the proposal has not advanced further after receiving a cautious response from Brussels. The discussions come ahead of a new UK-EU summit expected in the coming weeks, where both sides are likely to focus on strengthening economic cooperation in areas such as food exports, agriculture, energy trade and emissions regulations. In recent months, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves have repeatedly called for a stronger economic relationship with the EU following years of post-Brexit tensions. Behind the scenes, UK officials reportedly suggested broader negotiations […]
