2027: Babachir Considers Voting for Sowore, Rules Out APC, ADC, NDC

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has said he may consider voting for activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore in the 2027 general election, while ruling out support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and National Democratic Coalition (NDC). Speaking to journalists, the former SGF expressed growing dissatisfaction with the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suggesting that the government has not delivered on key promises. He questioned Tinubu's leadership, asking rhetorically, "So you valued being VP this much?" in reference to the presidency's perceived betrayal of promises made during the campaign. Lawal's consideration of Sowore comes after the activist was officially confirmed as the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate for the 2027 presidential election. Sowore has promised a new direction for Nigeria, promising to change the APC's rule […]

Tambuwal: ADC structure not built for Atiku, defends coalition exits

Former Sokoto State governor and Sokoto South senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is not a party whose structure was built for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any single politician. Speaking on a Channels Television programme, he dismissed claims that the ADC had been hijacked to serve Atiku’s presidential ambition ahead of 2027. Tambuwal explained that the ADC’s ongoing coalition arrangements were designed as a broader platform for opposition forces, not a personal vehicle for Atiku. He insisted that decisions within the party are taken collectively by its organs and leaders, including chairman David Mark and other stakeholders, rather than being dictated by one individual. Reacting to the exit of key figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the coalition, Tambuwal said their decisions were “personal choices” and not evidence of a crisis […]

DSS files cybercrime charges against El Rufai over alleged bugging of NSA Ribadu’s phone

The Department of State Services has filed cybercrime charges against former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai over the alleged unlawful interception of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone communications. The case was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, days after El Rufai claimed in a live TV interview that he listened to a tapped phone call in which Ribadu allegedly ordered security agents to detain him. According to court documents, prosecutors allege that El Rufai, 65, admitted during an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme on 13 February that he and unnamed associates had access to Ribadu’s private phone conversations. The government says the alleged act violates Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024, which criminalises unlawful interception of communications. In a second count, the DSS accuses El Rufai of stating in […]

Is Nigeria Cursed, or Are We the Curse? — Obi Laments Over Insecurity

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has decried the country’s worsening insecurity in a heartfelt post. Listing abductions and attacks over the past ten days—including kidnappings of Defence officials, students, worshippers, and farmers—Obi argues Nigeria’s “chaos” is due to collective leadership failures that have allowed lawlessness and violence to thrive. Obi claims no one, not even those tasked with security, is safe and warns that leaders have chosen “comfort over courage, politics over people, and power over purpose.” He insists the tragedies facing Nigerians—school abductions, attacks on worshippers, and erosion of democratic institutions—are not inevitable, but the result of failed governance. Calling for urgent reform, Obi says Nigeria must rise above indifference and excuses, and leaders must protect every community, child, and citizen. “You deserve safety, you deserve peace,” he concludes, urging Nigerians to demand a competent, compassionate […]

Why Goodluck Jonathan Stepped Back From Politics

Former President Goodluck Jonathan explained that his membership in the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) requires strict non-partisanship, which has kept him out of active politics. Speaking at his foundation’s 10th anniversary, Jonathan noted the forum’s mission is to prevent election crises across West Africa, intervening before problems escalate. Jonathan admitted he disappointed associates who expected a return to politics, but adherence to WAEF rules is a priority. He condemned the “rascality” in the current political climate and called for more responsible and prepared leadership. He reflected sadly on the kidnapping of 25 girls in Kebbi State, recalling similar incidents from his presidency, and offered prayers for their safe return. Jonathan said his foundation—focused on democracy and governance after advice from Tony Elumelu—committed to advancing democracy, peace, and institutional reforms across Africa, including mediation and building trust between citizens and […]

Turaki Appeals to Trump To Help Save Nigeria’s Democracy

Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, the newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, has called on former US President Donald Trump and other world leaders to help save Nigeria’s democracy. Turaki made this appeal amidst an ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, which he claims threatens the survival of the country’s democratic institutions. The PDP has recently experienced a deep split following a controversial convention in Ibadan and the emergence of rival factions. Turaki emphasized that external support and international encouragement are crucial for stabilizing the party and ensuring future elections are credible. He asked for Trump and other global figures to advocate for unity and reconciliation in Nigeria’s major opposition group, warning that prolonged disunity may destabilize democratic processes across the nation. Internal tensions have escalated as party leaders and members clash over authority, legitimacy, and the direction of […]

Police Use Teargas to Disperse Factions at PDP Headquarters

There was confusion at the Peoples Democratic Party national headquarters in Abuja after police used teargas to disperse supporters of rival factions. The incident happened on Tuesday as two rival groups were set to hold separate meetings at the party’s Wadata Plaza. One group was loyal to Nyesom Wike, while the other supported the newly formed National Working Committee led by Kabiru Turaki. Tensions rose when Samuel Anyanwu, secretary of the Wike-aligned bloc, arrived with supporters for Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee meetings. Supporters from both sides exchanged heated words, and some engaged in scuffles. As the situation grew tense, police ordered everyone to leave the premises, including party officials. The standoff escalated when officers fired several teargas canisters, sending politicians, party members, staff, and journalists running for safety. People caught in the stampede choked and shielded their […]
