Amotekun funding and welfare challenges threaten South West Nigeria regional security outfit

Amotekun, the regional security outfit for South West Nigeria, is facing serious challenges that threaten its ability to maintain security in the region. Five years after its establishment, the organization is struggling with funding constraints, inadequate equipment, poor welfare conditions, and weak coordination among the six South Western states. Security experts have identified legal limitations as one of Amotekun's biggest operational challenges. Unlike the police and military, Amotekun operatives are barred from carrying certain weapons and face restrictions on access to critical resources. The outfit was founded on January 9, 2020, in Ibadan, Oyo State, as the first regional security initiative initiated by a geopolitical zone in Nigeria. The Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Operation Amotekun, which means Leopard or Cheetah in Yoruba, covers all six states of South Western Nigeria but the Federal Government declared it an illegal operation […]

DSS, military foil planned kidnap of WAEC students in South East

A combined team of the Department of State Services and the Nigerian military has foiled a major plot to kidnap students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in the South East. Security sources said the operation targeted members of the Eastern Security Network who allegedly planned coordinated abductions of WAEC candidates in parts of the region. Acting on intelligence, operatives raided suspected hideouts linked to the group and disrupted the planned attacks before they could be carried out. During the operation, the team recovered a cache of high-calibre weapons, including several AK-47 rifles, magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. The recovered arms are believed to have been assembled to support large-scale attacks on examination centres and security personnel in the area. Security agencies said the successful raid was part of ongoing efforts to prevent mass abductions […]

States Rush to Deploy Forest Guards as Insecurity Deepens

Multiple Nigerian states are rushing to deploy forest guards as insecurity deepens across the country, marking a significant expansion of the federal government's Presidential Forest Guards Initiative. The programme was launched by President Bola Tinubu in May 2025 as part of renewed efforts to tackle nationwide insecurity, and has already yielded fruits with over 7,000 newly recruited Nigerian Forest Guards graduating following successful completion of an intensive three-month training programme. Kwara State has deployed nearly 1,000 newly trained forest guards to its hinterlands, declaring war on terrorists and kidnappers exploiting the state's wooded terrain. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq delivered a blunt message to criminal elements at a passing-out parade in Ilorin: their days of using Kwara's forests as a sanctuary are over, with plans to station at least 200 guards in each of the state's 17 local government areas. The Office […]

2027: Obi–Kwankwaso Bid Faces Northern Resistance

Moves to float a joint 2027 presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are already running into stiff resistance from key northern stakeholders. While support groups have been promoting an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or a new platform, many northern leaders say they remain unconvinced about the project and its chances. Northern elders and youth groups argue that Obi still suffers a trust deficit in parts of the region, with some politicians repeatedly linking him to alleged sympathy for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) – a charge his camp has consistently denied. They also insist that his 2023 performance in core northern states shows he has a lot of ground to cover despite strong youth enthusiasm and social media visibility. There are also complaints that the proposed platform for the alliance is […]

Weapons Looted During Libyan Conflict Found with Extremists in Nigeria – UN

The United Nations has raised serious concern that some weapons looted during the 2011 conflict in Libya have ended up in the hands of extremist groups operating in Nigeria. Speaking at UN Headquarters in New York, Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, expressed concern over the long-term impact of illicit arms trafficking, noting that the uncontrolled flow of weapons from Libya has created a cycle of instability in the Sahel and West Africa. According to UN officials, arms from Libya’s vast stockpiles were smuggled across porous borders into several Sahel countries, including Niger, Chad, Mali and Nigeria, where they now fuel terrorist violence and organised crime. Security analysts say the uncontrolled flow of these weapons has “created a cycle of instability in the region,” empowering insurgent groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as […]

Insecurity in Yorubaland: Is Amotekun Still Effective in South-West?

Four years after its creation, the regional security outfit Amotekun (Operation Leopard) is still grappling with the hydra-headed security challenges in Nigeria’s South-West, as kidnappings, killings, and banditry continue to surge across Yorubaland. When the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed Operation Amotekun, was set up in 2020, it was launched with fanfare and optimism that it would tame the rising insecurity plaguing the Southwest. Four years on, however, stakeholders believe there has been a surge in crime and criminality within the region. Critical stakeholders, including traditional rulers, convened by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, recently confirmed the worsening security situation during a summit on insecurity. The summit observed that there have been organised, systematic attacks on traditional rulers and eminent sons and daughters of Yoruba land by suspected herders. According to the Council on Foreign Relations’ Nigeria […]

AY Makun Calls for National Unity in Fight Against Insecurity

Popular Nigerian comedian, actor, and filmmaker Ayo Makun, widely known as AY Makun, has called for national unity in the fight against Nigeria's escalating insecurity, describing the country as turning into a "crime scene" amid rising bandit attacks and kidnappings. AY Makun argued that financial ties to political interests can weaken accountability in Nigeria's security and governance system. He emphasized that Nigerians must unite across ethnic, religious, and political lines to demand real action from the government and security agencies to end the crisis. The comedian's comments come amid recent attacks involving school kidnappings, killings of security personnel, and increased bandit activities across Nigeria. He wrote that bandits now storm churches to kill and abduct Christians, while children are kidnapped from schools and even a Brigadier General was shot dead. AY lamented that "every day brings fresh chaos yet the […]
