At least 22 people were killed and more than 100 injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone assault across Ukraine, targeting multiple cities and critical infrastructure, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday.
The deadliest strike occurred in the central city of Dnipro, where 16 people lost their lives, including two children. Rescue teams searching through the wreckage of damaged residential buildings recovered the bodies of an eight-year-old boy and several women trapped beneath the rubble.
In the capital, Kyiv, six people were reported killed as explosions rocked the city during the early hours of the morning. Residential buildings, energy facilities, and other civilian infrastructure suffered significant damage.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched 656 drones and 73 missiles, including ballistic and cruise missiles, in what he described as one of the largest attacks in recent months. He renewed calls for additional air defense support from international partners, particularly more Patriot missile systems to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to intercept incoming threats.
According to local authorities, the strikes sparked fires across several districts of Kyiv, damaging apartment buildings, homes, commercial sites, and other civilian facilities. Power disruptions were also reported in parts of the city.
In Dnipro, officials said sections of residential buildings were completely destroyed. Emergency crews continued rescue operations throughout the day as they searched for survivors among the debris.
Other regions were also affected by the attacks. In Kharkiv, at least ten people were injured, including a child, while infrastructure facilities in Zaporizhzhia and other areas sustained damage.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the strikes were carried out in response to previous Ukrainian attacks and claimed that all intended military objectives had been successfully hit. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia would continue what he described as “systematic strikes” against Ukrainian military infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials rejected Moscow’s justification and accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian areas. Kyiv called on its international allies to increase pressure on Moscow and provide additional military assistance.
The attacks forced thousands of residents to seek shelter underground. Kyiv’s metro system reported that more than 41,000 people, including approximately 4,500 children, spent the night in subway stations, marking one of the highest shelter figures recorded in recent years.
The escalation comes as both sides continue to exchange long-range attacks. Ukrainian forces confirmed overnight strikes on several targets inside Russia, including locations in the Kursk region and an oil refinery in Krasnodar. Russian authorities reported one fatality in Kursk following a Ukrainian drone attack.
Since the expiration of a temporary ceasefire in early May, fighting between the two countries has intensified, with repeated missile and drone attacks causing casualties and destruction on both sides.
The conflict began after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and despite ongoing international diplomatic efforts, prospects for a negotiated settlement remain uncertain.
