States’ capital spending plunges 58% as 2027 politics intensifies

Capital expenditure by 26 state governments across Nigeria plunged by about ₦2.19tn within just three months in the first quarter of 2026, as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify. An analysis of their quarterly financial reports shows that total capital spending fell by 58.1%, from ₦3.79tn in Q4 2025 to ₦1.59tn in Q1 2026. The figures, drawn from budget implementation and performance reports published on state government websites, indicate a broad slowdown in infrastructure and development projects. By contrast, a breakdown of expenditure between January and June 2025 had shown 31 states collectively spending about ₦2.75tn on capital projects over six months, averaging ₦1.38tn. Navy intercepts 130 bags of smuggled rice in Badagry

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 130 bags of smuggled foreign rice in the Badagry area of Lagos State during a recent anti smuggling operation. The seizure is part of ongoing efforts by naval authorities to clamp down on economic saboteurs operating along Nigeria’s western maritime corridor and border creeks. NDLEA busts syndicate hiding cocaine and loud in food flasks to UK

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has uncovered a drug trafficking syndicate that hid cocaine and loud in food flasks and snack packs for shipment to the United Kingdom and Nigeria.​ The agency said its officers at the export shed of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, intercepted 12 large parcels of cocaine concealed in the false bottom of food flasks on April 9. The consignment, weighing 2.80 kilograms, was destined for the UK on a Virgin Atlantic flight.​ Two cargo agents, Ama Obinna Ufeim, 33, and Ogabi Monday Akorede, 39, were arrested at the airport.
