Fuji Star Remi Aluko Opens Up on Glaucoma Battle: “I Can’t See”

Article arrow_drop_down

Nigerian Fuji music star Igwe Remi Aluko has opened up about his ongoing battle with glaucoma, revealing that he is currently blind but refuses to let the condition weigh him down.

In a recent interview, the Fuji musician, also known as “Igwe of Fuji,” stated, “I’m blind for real but I won’t allow it to weigh me down,” opening a rare window into the challenges he faces as a visually impaired performer.

Aluko, whose full name is Aderemi Aluko, has been battling glaucoma, an eye condition that can lead to vision loss, for years. He has shared his experience publicly, including during a live interview where he discussed his phone saga, his battle with glaucoma, and the dark side of Fuji music.

The 48-year-old musician, born September 29, 1977, in Ebute Meta, Lagos State, began performing at the age of 15 and adopted a style that blends traditional Fuji rhythms with contemporary elements. He is also known for acting in Yoruba cinema.

In a previous 2015 interview, Aluko had denied being completely blind, saying he only had an optical disease (glaucoma) which he had overcome after eye surgery in India. He explained at the time that the blindness story was a fake report and that he could still see people, though he had an eye problem.

However, recent reports suggest his condition has worsened, with Aluko now confirming he is blind for real. He has received support from the Nigerian music community, with fellow artists praising his resilience and determination to continue performing despite his visual impairment.

Aluko has also urged colleagues and fans to avoid unnecessary disputes over age and financial status, describing such conflicts as unproductive. He has maintained his musical career despite the health challenge, continuing to perform and engage with his fanbase.

The Fuji star’s openness about his condition has sparked conversations about glaucoma awareness and the challenges faced by artists with disabilities in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

World Cup Fans Barred from Bringing Water Bottles into Stadia

FIFA has banned fans from bringing refillable water bottles into World Cup 2026 venues in a last-minute policy change that will force thirsty supporters to pay for bottled water inside the stadiums. As recently as last month, FIFA's official stadium code of conduct included a clause which read: "For the avoidance of doubt, empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles, up to 1 liter in capacity, may be brought into the Stadium." However, those guidelines have now been tweaked to explicitly ban refillable bottles. The updated stadium code of conduct now states: "For the avoidance of doubt, reusable water bottles may not be brought into the stadium." Other bottle types are similarly banned due to the potential risk of injury if thrown. In a statement to AFP, a FIFA spokesperson said the rule change was taken on safety grounds, noting that several […]

Weapons Looted During Libyan Conflict Found with Extremists in Nigeria – UN

The United Nations has raised serious concern that some weapons looted during the 2011 conflict in Libya have ended up in the hands of extremist groups operating in Nigeria. Speaking at UN Headquarters in New York, Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, expressed concern over the long-term impact of illicit arms trafficking, noting that the uncontrolled flow of weapons from Libya has created a cycle of instability in the Sahel and West Africa. According to UN officials, arms from Libya’s vast stockpiles were smuggled across porous borders into several Sahel countries, including Niger, Chad, Mali and Nigeria, where they now fuel terrorist violence and organised crime. Security analysts say the uncontrolled flow of these weapons has “created a cycle of instability in the region,” empowering insurgent groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as […]
