World Cup Fans Barred from Bringing Water Bottles into Stadia
FIFA has banned fans from bringing refillable water bottles into World Cup 2026 venues in a last-minute policy change that will force thirsty supporters to pay for bottled water inside the stadiums. As recently as last month, FIFA's official stadium code of conduct included a clause which read: "For the avoidance of doubt, empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles, up to 1 liter in capacity, may be brought into the Stadium." However, those guidelines have now been tweaked to explicitly ban refillable bottles. The updated stadium code of conduct now states: "For the avoidance of doubt, reusable water bottles may not be brought into the stadium." Other bottle types are similarly banned due to the potential risk of injury if thrown. In a statement to AFP, a FIFA spokesperson said the rule change was taken on safety grounds, noting that several […]

Weapons Looted During Libyan Conflict Found with Extremists in Nigeria – UN
The United Nations has raised serious concern that some weapons looted during the 2011 conflict in Libya have ended up in the hands of extremist groups operating in Nigeria. Speaking at UN Headquarters in New York, Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, expressed concern over the long-term impact of illicit arms trafficking, noting that the uncontrolled flow of weapons from Libya has created a cycle of instability in the Sahel and West Africa. According to UN officials, arms from Libya’s vast stockpiles were smuggled across porous borders into several Sahel countries, including Niger, Chad, Mali and Nigeria, where they now fuel terrorist violence and organised crime. Security analysts say the uncontrolled flow of these weapons has “created a cycle of instability in the region,” empowering insurgent groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as […]

Govt: Accountability Is Collective Duty, Not Just Celebrities
Government officials and civic leaders across Nigeria are emphasizing that accountability remains a collective duty shared by all citizens, not merely the responsibility of celebrities and public figures who vocally demand transparency from elected leaders. The call for shared accountability comes as Nigerian society increasingly witnesses high-profile public figures, including celebrities, using their platforms to demand government transparency and answerability for public projects and services. While these voices have amplified public discourse, officials stress that ordinary citizens must also actively participate in governance oversight. Without a clear understanding of their civic duties, citizens are less likely to engage in political processes actively and hold their leaders accountable. The Federal Government recently launched the "My Nigeria, My Responsibility" campaign, calling for patriotism as an active verb expressed through personal values and collective civic engagement.
