Chad deports Nigerians fleeing jihadist violence

Chad has arrested and deported hundreds of Nigerians who fled jihadist violence in the Lake Chad region and sought safety in its territory, Nigerian and humanitarian sources say. Many of those affected are from states in northern Nigeria that have endured years of attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups. According to Nigerian officials in Borno State, the Chadian authorities recently rounded up irregular Nigerian migrants in several towns and transported them to the border for return to Nigeria. Local sources say some of those detained had lived in Chad for years after fleeing earlier waves of insurgent attacks and had been surviving through informal work and begging. Humanitarian agencies report that thousands of Nigerians remain displaced around the Lake Chad Basin because of ongoing insecurity and repeated attacks by jihadist groups. Many crossed into neighbouring Chad, Niger and […]

DHQ: Most terrorist fighters driven by fear and money, not belief

The Defence Headquarters says that more than 60 percent of terrorist fighters in Nigeria are not driven by extremist ideology but by fear, coercion and financial incentives. It explained that many of those taking part in insurgent activities were forced to join or lured with promises of money and protection. A statement from DHQ noted that only a minority of the fighters are hardcore ideologues or commanders who are deeply committed to the violent cause. The rest are described as followers who became involved due to threats to their lives, lack of options or economic hardship in their communities. According to the military, some recruits were abducted as teenagers, pressured through family connections or told their relatives would be harmed if they refused to fight. Others were attracted by the promise of regular income, food or a sense of belonging […]

Will more defence funds make Nigeria safer

Nigeria has spent about 32.88 trillion naira on defence in the last 15 years, roughly 12.5 percent of total national budgets of 262.834 trillion naira in that period, yet insecurity remains widespread across the country . Despite these rising allocations, many communities still face insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes and oil related violence, raising doubts about whether more money alone can make Nigerians safer . Security trackers estimate that over 100,000 people have been killed in violent incidents since 2012, with thousands abducted and about 3.726 million citizens displaced and living in roughly 3,900 camps nationwide . The trend has continued into 2026, with at least 1,091 deaths recorded from violent attacks in just the first 41 days of the year, underscoring the scale of Nigeria’s security crisis despite years of increased defence spending . Against this backdrop, the National […]

Boko Haram has lasted longer than civil war Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the Boko Haram insurgency has now lasted for about 15 years, making it longer than the Nigerian civil war. He described the prolonged conflict as a serious failure in addressing insecurity and development challenges in the country. Obasanjo spoke while comparing the three year civil war to the insurgency which began around 2009 and has continued despite several military operations. He said the situation shows that Nigeria has not tackled the root causes of extremism, including poverty, unemployment and poor governance. He also warned that long running conflicts weaken national unity and drain resources that should be used for education, health and infrastructure. Obasanjo called for a comprehensive approach that combines security action with dialogue, economic opportunities and community based solutions. The former president urged current leaders to learn from past mistakes and design policies […]
