Chad has arrested and deported hundreds of Nigerians who fled jihadist violence in the Lake Chad region and sought safety in its territory, Nigerian and humanitarian sources say. Many of those affected are from states in northern Nigeria that have endured years of attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups.
According to Nigerian officials in Borno State, the Chadian authorities recently rounded up irregular Nigerian migrants in several towns and transported them to the border for return to Nigeria. Local sources say some of those detained had lived in Chad for years after fleeing earlier waves of insurgent attacks and had been surviving through informal work and begging.
Humanitarian agencies report that thousands of Nigerians remain displaced around the Lake Chad Basin because of ongoing insecurity and repeated attacks by jihadist groups. Many crossed into neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon in search of safety but now face pressure to return home even though conditions in some communities are still fragile.
Officials of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency say they are profiling the deportees and working to provide initial support, including shelter, food and medical checks on arrival. They warn that sudden mass returns put additional strain on already limited resources in host communities that are themselves struggling with poverty and the effects of conflict.
Rights groups and aid workers have raised concerns that deportations without proper screening may expose some returnees to renewed danger if they are sent back to areas where jihadist attacks continue. They are urging countries in the region to coordinate closely and respect refugee protection principles while managing security and migration pressures.
The Lake Chad Basin has seen repeated displacement over the past decade as Boko Haram and other extremist groups carry out killings, kidnappings and raids on villages. Regional governments, including Chad and Nigeria, have launched joint military operations, but the security situation remains volatile in many rural areas.
