Femi Adebayo mourns Chief Kanran, says ‘Seven Doors’ marked his final performance

Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran. His last screen appearance was in Femi Adebayo’s yet-to-be-released film, Seven Doors, a coincidence many have described as both symbolic and deeply emotional. In a heartfelt tribute, Adebayo said he never imagined the film’s title, which represents transition and passage, would become a metaphor for Kanran’s final journey. “He played in Seven Doors, and now it feels as though life mirrored art. Nobody thought it would be his last performance. It is painful and shocking,” Adebayo wrote. Chief Kanran passed away on Friday in a Lagos hospital after a brief illness, just days before his 70th birthday. Colleagues recalled his remarkable dedication to the craft, noting that he gave his all on set despite health challenges. “He delivered that role with […]

Phyna Blasts Dangote Group Over Sister’s Accident, Accuses Them of Privacy Violation

Big Brother Naija winner Phyna has called out the Dangote Group after her sister, Ruth Otabor, was badly injured in a truck accident near Auchi Polytechnic on August 13, 2025. Ruth lost a leg following the crash and is receiving treatment at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. Phyna alleged that company staff visited her sister in the hospital, took photos without the family’s consent, and later posted them online. She said this was disrespectful and questioned why the company referred to her sister as “Mrs. Ruth Otabor” in a public statement. “Who gave you permission to take pictures of my family and post them online? You turned a hospital visit into content? I hope this wasn’t done to my sister. From now on, no cameras will be allowed in any meeting or discussion about this case,” she wrote. Phyna also criticised […]

China Opposes European Plan to Reinstate Sanctions on Iran nuclear programme

China has voiced opposition to fresh European sanctions on Iran’s nuclear programme, saying such measures would harm trust and undermine efforts to restart diplomatic talks. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Friday that sanctions “do not help parties build trust” and are “not conducive to the early resumption of negotiations.” His remarks came after Britain, France, and Germany — the E3 group — warned they would reimpose United Nations sanctions if no diplomatic breakthrough is reached by the end of August. The sanctions, lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal in exchange for limits on Iran’s programme, can be restored by any party to the agreement before it expires in October. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday that Tehran is working with China and Russia to prevent the sanctions’ return. He warned that Iran has “tools to respond” […]

Between January 1 and August 13, 2025, Africa recorded 97,144 suspected mpox cases, 29,849 confirmed infections, and 593 deaths in 24 African Union (AU) member states — a 34.5% drop in confirmed cases over the past six weeks. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Burundi accounted for over 80% of this year’s infections but have reported steep declines. Other countries, including Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ghana, saw smaller outbreaks. Key response milestones include: 6 million […]
