Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran. His last screen appearance was in Femi Adebayo’s yet-to-be-released film, Seven Doors, a coincidence many have described as both symbolic and deeply emotional.
In a heartfelt tribute, Adebayo said he never imagined the film’s title, which represents transition and passage, would become a metaphor for Kanran’s final journey.
“He played in Seven Doors, and now it feels as though life mirrored art. Nobody thought it would be his last performance. It is painful and shocking,” Adebayo wrote.
Chief Kanran passed away on Friday in a Lagos hospital after a brief illness, just days before his 70th birthday.
Colleagues recalled his remarkable dedication to the craft, noting that he gave his all on set despite health challenges. “He delivered that role with unmatched energy, almost as if he knew it was his farewell performance,” a crew member shared.
Kanran, who rose to fame in the Yoruba theatre scene, was celebrated for his powerful voice, stage presence, and versatility. For many in the industry, the timing of his death so soon after wrapping Seven Doors feels both poignant and unforgettable.
“Chief Kanran may have stepped through the final door, but his voice and artistry will live on,” Adebayo said.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues and fans, honouring his decades-long contribution to Nigerian entertainment and his passion for storytelling until the very end.
