Russian strikes cut power and heat to thousands in Ukraine

Russia has launched a large overnight barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine, knocking out power, heat and water for tens of thousands of people in several major cities. Officials said the latest wave is part of an intensified winter campaign targeting the country’s energy infrastructure. In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said around 3,500 apartment buildings were left without heating after critical facilities were hit. More than 100,000 families also lost electricity, with private energy firm DTEK confirming that one of its thermal power plants was struck. Two people were injured in the capital and a residential building was damaged. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles, one cruise missile and 219 drones during the attack. Air defences shot down or neutralised 16 missiles and 197 drones, but several still reached their targets, causing widespread outages. The […]

Guardiola says he is hurt by human suffering in wars

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he feels deeply hurt by the suffering of civilians in wars and violent conflicts around the world. Guardiola recently missed a press conference before his team’s league match at Tottenham after giving a speech in Barcelona in support of Palestinian children at a charity event. He has often spoken about issues beyond football and said he will not stop, despite suggestions that he should focus only on the sport. Speaking ahead of City’s League Cup semi final second leg against Newcastle, he became emotional as he described watching news reports of children being killed or injured in different conflict zones. He mentioned violence in Palestine, Ukraine and Sudan, as well as recent shootings by United States immigration agency ICE, as events that have left him angry and determined to speak out. Guardiola said modern […]

Russia batters Ukraine’s power grid with drones and missiles ahead of peace talks

Russia has launched one of its heaviest winter barrages on Ukraine’s energy system, firing around 450 drones and more than 70 missiles across eight regions and knocking out heating for hundreds of thousands of people in sub‑zero temperatures. The overnight strikes hit Kyiv and Kharkiv particularly hard, damaging power and heating infrastructure as well as several apartment blocks, a kindergarten building and other civilian sites. In the capital, authorities said about 1,170 apartment buildings were left without heating, while an air raid alert lasted more than five hours. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said facilities that heat water for homes were among the targets, leaving “hundreds of thousands of families, including children” without warmth as temperatures plunged to around minus 20 to minus 25 degrees Celsius. In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that over 800 buildings lost heat after water had […]

Ukraine talks set for next week as deep freeze strains war‑battered power grid

Ukraine, Russia and the United States will hold a new round of talks in Abu Dhabi on February 4–5, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has confirmed, as diplomacy cautiously resumes nearly four years into the war. The meeting follows an initial round in late January that ended without a breakthrough on core issues such as territory, with Moscow still demanding that Kyiv cede additional land in eastern Ukraine, a condition Ukraine continues to reject. Zelenskiy said Kyiv is ready for “substantive” discussions that bring the country closer to what he called a “real and dignified” peace. The renewed talks come as a brutal cold snap exposes the weakness of Ukraine’s energy grid after repeated Russian strikes. In Kyiv, a major system failure on Saturday cut power to parts of the country and left almost 3,500 apartment blocks temporarily without heating, with about […]

Ukraine says deadly Russian strikes threaten US‑backed peace talks

Ukraine has accused Russia of undermining efforts to end their nearly four‑year war by launching fresh deadly attacks while Ukrainian, Russian and U.S. officials hold direct peace talks in Abu Dhabi. Overnight bombardments killed one person and injured 27 in Kyiv and Kharkiv, even as negotiators met for a second day to discuss the latest U.S.‑brokered proposals. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said President Vladimir Putin ordered a “brutal massive missile strike” on Ukraine while the delegations were meeting, accusing Moscow of hitting “not only our people, but also the negotiation table”. Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov said discussions in Abu Dhabi were focused on parameters for ending the war and the future logic of the negotiation process. The talks come after U.S. President Donald Trump met Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky at the World Economic Forum in Davos and U.S. envoy […]

Zelenskiy: Territorial issue on table at UAE trilateral talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says the vital question of territory in Ukraine’s war with Russia will be discussed at U.S.‑brokered trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi on Friday and Saturday. Kyiv faces growing pressure from Washington to strike a peace deal in the nearly four‑year conflict, while Moscow is demanding that Ukraine give up the entire eastern Donbas region before halting its offensive. Speaking in a WhatsApp media chat a day after what he and U.S. President Donald Trump described as positive talks, Zelenskiy said the status of Donbas would be a central focus of the UAE meeting. “The issue of Donbas is key,” he said, adding that the talks would examine how all three sides view the territorial question. An aide to Zelenskiy said discussions would start on Friday evening. A major sticking point remains Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demand […]

Trump’s Greenland climbdown eases tension but future still unclear

U.S. President Donald Trump has backed away from using tariffs or military force to push his controversial plan to acquire Greenland from Denmark, easing fears of a major transatlantic rift. After weeks of threats, he dropped the tariff idea and hinted that a preliminary agreement over the Arctic territory could be reached instead. Trump’s bid to gain control of Greenland, a Danish territory and key NATO outpost, had alarmed European allies who saw it as a direct challenge to an alliance that has underpinned Western security since World War Two. Following talks at the World Economic Forum in Davos with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump voiced optimism about a deal that would secure a U.S. missile defence site and access to critical minerals while countering Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. European stock markets steadied on the news, […]

Russia claims control of key Ukrainian city Kupiansk

Russia has announced that its troops have taken control of the frontline city of Kupiansk in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. Leonid Sharov, head of Russia’s Zapad (West) military group, told state media that the city is now under the command of the Russian Sixth Army. Russian officials have repeatedly portrayed Kupiansk as a vital logistics and railway hub for Ukrainian operations in the northeast. Moscow argues that securing the city strengthens its defensive line and disrupts Ukrainian supply routes towards Kharkiv and other parts of the front. Ukraine has rejected earlier Russian declarations of full control over Kupiansk, insisting that its forces remain active in and around the city. Kyiv’s military authorities say Ukrainian troops are still engaging Russian units and have carried out counterattacks to retake ground in the area. Recent assessments by independent analysts suggest that the situation […]

Ukrainian Team Heads to Florida for High Stakes US Talks

Senior Ukrainian negotiators have arrived in Florida for key talks with US officials as Washington steps up efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. The delegation will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential adviser Jared Kushner on Sunday. The meetings will focus on a revised 19 point peace plan backed by US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants the conflict to end quickly. The new outline replaces an earlier 28 point proposal that faced strong resistance in Kyiv and across Europe. Trump has signaled he could recognize Russian control over parts of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk that are currently occupied by Moscow’s forces. This would leave Ukraine and its European partners to decide whether to keep supporting Ukraine’s defense or accept the new territorial reality. The Ukrainian team now includes […]
