Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United Kingdom on Sunday for high-level talks with key European leaders as efforts continue to strengthen support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia.
The meeting, hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Downing Street, also brings together French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The three nations form the E3 group, which has remained among Ukraine’s strongest supporters throughout the conflict.
According to Zelensky, the discussions will focus on military cooperation, European security, air defense capabilities, and the diplomatic path toward ending the war. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Europe plays a central role in any future negotiations concerning Ukraine’s future.
In a message shared on social media upon his arrival in London, the Ukrainian leader stressed that Europe must remain united and actively involved in shaping security decisions that affect the continent.
The meeting comes at a time when global attention has increasingly shifted toward tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Iran, potentially reducing international focus on the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has accused Russia of carrying out a drone attack near the Chornobyl nuclear site. Ukrainian officials said the strike damaged part of a facility used for storing spent nuclear fuel.
Ukraine’s state nuclear operator, Enerhoatom, reported that no casualties were recorded and that a fire caused by the attack was quickly extinguished. Authorities also confirmed that radiation levels remained stable and within normal limits.
Zelensky strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a deliberate threat to nuclear safety. He said the targeted facility is a critical piece of infrastructure and accused Moscow of endangering regional security.
Chornobyl remains one of the most sensitive nuclear sites in the world following the catastrophic 1986 disaster, which released radioactive material across large parts of Europe.
Fighting also continued elsewhere in Ukraine. Authorities reported that at least three people were killed in Russian strikes near the southern region of Zaporizhzhia, which has experienced intensified attacks in recent weeks.
At the same time, Ukraine has expanded its long-range drone operations against targets inside Russia. Recent attacks have reached areas around St. Petersburg, highlighting Kyiv’s growing ability to strike far beyond the front lines.
Diplomatic tensions remain high as both sides continue to reject each other’s proposals for ending the conflict. Earlier, Zelensky called for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, arguing that renewed negotiations are necessary to move toward peace.
Putin dismissed the proposal during remarks at an economic forum in St. Petersburg, maintaining that Russia would only end military operations once its strategic objectives had been achieved. He also argued that an immediate ceasefire would allow Ukraine to strengthen its military position.
As the war enters its fifth year, European leaders continue efforts to coordinate support for Ukraine while exploring diplomatic options, although significant differences between Moscow and Kyiv remain a major obstacle to any peace agreement.
