Senate confirms Dakingari as non career ambassador

The Senate has approved the appointment of former Kebbi State governor Saidu Usman Dakingari as a non career ambassador, following a fresh nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the confirmation during plenary after the lawmakers considered the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which screened Dakingari and recommended his approval. The confirmation puts an end to weeks of controversy over his earlier botched posting as ambassador to Turkey. In January, the presidency had named Dakingari among new ambassador designates and announced his posting to Turkey, claiming the appointments were drawn from 68 envoys confirmed by the Senate in December 2025. It later emerged that his name was not on the original list screened and approved by the upper chamber, forcing the presidency to withdraw the announcement and blame a “naming mix up.” To […]

Rowdy Senate session as clause on real time results is dropped

The Senate held a tense and rowdy plenary on Tuesday as lawmakers revisited last Wednesday’s decision on a key clause in the Electoral Act amendment bill. The uproar followed moves to alter the provision on electronic transmission of election results. Trouble began when Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno, citing Orders 1(b) and 52(6) of the Senate Standing Orders 2023, asked the chamber to rescind its earlier decision on Clause 60(3) of the bill. His motion, seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi, sought to adjust the language of the clause. According to page 45 of the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Clause 60(3) originally states that the presiding officer shall electronically transmit results from each polling unit to the IReV portal in real time after Form EC8A has been signed and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by […]

Senate passes Electoral Act bill, drops plan for mandatory e‑result transmission

The Senate has passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 but declined to make electronic transmission of election results mandatory for the 2027 polls. Lawmakers rejected a proposed change to Clause 60 (3), which would have required presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission to transmit polling unit results to the IReV portal in real time after completing Form EC8A. Instead, they retained the existing 2022 provision that results should be transferred “in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.” Senate President Godswill Akpabio insisted the chamber did not remove electronic transmission from the law. He said the Senate only chose to keep the wording already in the 2022 Act, which INEC used in the last general elections. The Senate also rejected a proposal to increase the penalty for buying or selling Permanent Voter Cards from two years to […]
