Rowdy Senate session as clause on real time results is dropped

The Senate held a tense and rowdy plenary on Tuesday as lawmakers revisited last Wednesday’s decision on a key clause in the Electoral Act amendment bill. The uproar followed moves to alter the provision on electronic transmission of election results. Trouble began when Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno, citing Orders 1(b) and 52(6) of the Senate Standing Orders 2023, asked the chamber to rescind its earlier decision on Clause 60(3) of the bill. His motion, seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi, sought to adjust the language of the clause. According to page 45 of the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Clause 60(3) originally states that the presiding officer shall electronically transmit results from each polling unit to the IReV portal in real time after Form EC8A has been signed and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by […]

Senate passes Electoral Act bill, drops plan for mandatory e‑result transmission

The Senate has passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 but declined to make electronic transmission of election results mandatory for the 2027 polls. Lawmakers rejected a proposed change to Clause 60 (3), which would have required presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission to transmit polling unit results to the IReV portal in real time after completing Form EC8A. Instead, they retained the existing 2022 provision that results should be transferred “in a manner as prescribed by the Commission.” Senate President Godswill Akpabio insisted the chamber did not remove electronic transmission from the law. He said the Senate only chose to keep the wording already in the 2022 Act, which INEC used in the last general elections. The Senate also rejected a proposal to increase the penalty for buying or selling Permanent Voter Cards from two years to […]

Senator Natasha breaks silence on FG’s withdrawal of criminal charges

Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan has reacted to the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw the criminal charges earlier filed against her over alleged defamation and cyber related offences. The Kogi Central lawmaker said the move vindicates her long standing claims that the case was politically motivated and aimed at silencing her. Court documents show that the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation filed a notice of discontinuance on December 12, 2025, effectively ending the case marked FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025 at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The charges stemmed from petitions by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi governor Yahaya Bello after Natasha alleged during a TV interview that her life was being threatened. Senator Natasha thanked Nigerians, civil society groups and her constituents for standing by her throughout the legal battle. She recalled experiencing a similar situation in the past where she was stopped from travelling abroad, despite having no pending legal case or court order barring her from leaving the country. “Hello, fellow Nigerians. Natasha Clarifies Invitation to Akpabio as Protocol

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has clarified that her official invitation to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other senators was a standard procedural courtesy, not a personal or political gesture. The invitation was for colleagues to attend the inauguration of constituency projects marking her second anniversary in the Senate. After the letter was read during plenary, some interpretations suggested it was an "olive branch" amidst their known political differences. The Senator expressed displeasure at this interpretation on her social media handles. She stated that the announcement was a routine protocol and not a sign of reconciliation. "Announcement by protocol don turn to 'Olive Branch, Reconciliation'," she wrote, adding that failing to invite the institution would have also been criticized. She explained that she followed customary practice by writing to the Senate through the presiding officer. She emphasized that despite ongoing court cases, […]

AGF Says Senator Natasha Violated Law in Akpabio Case

The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) has defended its decision to file defamation charges against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stating her actions violated the Penal Code. The charges were initiated following complaints from Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. The case relates to public statements made by the senator, including an allegation of an assassination plot against her. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who pleaded not guilty after being arraigned in June, filed a preliminary objection seeking to dismiss the charges. She argues that the AGF is abusing its prosecutorial power. In a newly filed counter-affidavit, the AGF's office urged the court to reject this objection. It stated that the charges were filed in the public interest after a police investigation and are consistent with Nigerian law. The prosecution alleges the senator made "harmful imputations," claiming […]
