Akpabio says ADC is dead amid fresh National Assembly defections

Article arrow_drop_down

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the African Democratic Congress is “dead” following a fresh wave of defections by its lawmakers in the National Assembly. He made the remark during plenary while reading letters from senators and members of the House of Representatives who announced their exit from the party.

Akpabio’s comment came shortly after he read the resignation letter of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who defected from the ADC to the Labour Party. As more defection letters were tabled, the Senate President joked that lawmakers leaving the ADC should “just compile everything in one paper” because, in his view, “ADC is dead.”

Abaribe, who represents Abia South, said in his letter that his decision was driven by “ongoing legal uncertainties, multiple court cases and leadership crises” within the ADC. He described remaining in the party under such conditions as untenable, noting that internal disputes had weakened its structures and effectiveness.

The development in the Senate mirrors a similar trend in the House of Representatives, where at least 17 ADC lawmakers recently defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, while one crossed over to the All Progressives Congress. Many of them cited internal wrangling, unending litigation and loss of confidence in the ADC leadership as their reasons.

Akpabio’s “ADC is dead” remark drew laughter and reactions in the chamber, but it also underscored the scale of the party’s crisis. Commentators say the exodus is closely linked to the decision of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to abandon the ADC for the NDC, taking many of their supporters and allied lawmakers along.

Despite the Senate President’s verdict, ADC leaders have insisted in separate reactions that the party is not dead and will rebuild after the defections. They maintain that the party remains committed to contesting the 2027 elections even as it grapples with legal and leadership challenges.

For now, however, the latest shifts further strengthen the NDC and Labour Party blocs in the National Assembly and highlight the ongoing realignment of opposition forces ahead of 2027.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has demanded that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas refund N110 billion to the public treasury after a Federal High Court in Lagos declared the National Assembly's spending on luxury SUVs and unlawful allowances illegal. The court ruling on the 5th of May came in a suit SERAP filed in 2023, challenging the 10th Assembly's plan to spend N40 billion on 465 exotic and bulletproof cars and N70 billion as holiday allowances for new lawmakers. Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court held that the N110 billion spend violated section 57(4) of the Public Procurement Act, 2007, the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, and lawmakers' constitutional oath of office. The judgment found that the spending breached the principle that public funds must be used judiciously, especially at a time when […]
