Fed Govt sets up panel on 200b gas power rail plan

The Federal Government has set up an inter agency technical committee to review a proposed 200 billion dollar Integrated Gas Power and High Speed Rail Project. The move signals a cautious approach to one of the most ambitious infrastructure proposals in Nigeria’s history. Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume inaugurated the panel in Abuja and asked members to carry out a thorough and professional assessment of the proposal to guide decisions in the national interest. The committee will evaluate a submission by De Sadel Nigeria Limited working with China Liancai Petroleum Investment Holdings Limited for a multi phase project that combines gas development, power generation and transmission, and a 4,000 kilometre high speed rail network. Akume said the size and complexity of the plan require rigorous scrutiny. He stressed that government must be satisfied with its technical […]

Resident doctors to begin indefinite nationwide strike Tuesday

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has declared an indefinite nationwide strike to begin at 12 00 a m on Tuesday April 7 2026. The decision followed an extraordinary NEC meeting where the body reviewed government’s handling of its long standing demands. NARD said the action became inevitable after repeated failures by the Federal Government to honour agreements and implement terms reached in earlier negotiations. The doctors accused authorities of making promises on paper without translating them into concrete improvements on the ground. Key issues listed include unpaid salary and promotion arrears for many members across teaching and specialist hospitals. The association is also demanding improved working conditions, implementation of agreed allowances and adequate staffing to reduce excessive workload. Resident doctors say the current situation is pushing many colleagues to burnout or forcing them to leave the country, worsening brain […]

SSANIP asks FG renegotiation panel to hasten talks

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics has appealed to the Federal Government’s panel on the renegotiation of its agreement with unions in the polytechnic sector to speed up its work. The union said delays in concluding the process are frustrating workers and threatening the fragile peace in the system. SSANIP noted that the renegotiation of its agreement with the government has dragged on for years without clear timelines for completion. It warned that leaving key welfare issues unresolved for too long sends a wrong signal about how polytechnic workers are valued. The association urged members of the renegotiation panel to treat the process as urgent and to increase the frequency of meetings until a new agreement is reached and signed. It stressed that quick, sincere engagement will help prevent a repeat of past strikes that disrupted academic activities nationwide. […]

Fed Govt Tightens Airport Security With New Joint Screening System

The Federal Government has introduced a one stop joint screening system at Nigerian airports to strengthen security and reduce delays for travellers. The directive comes through the Office of the National Security Adviser and targets both international and domestic terminals. Under the new system, security checks by different agencies will be merged into a single, coordinated screening point. Immigration, customs, aviation security, and other security agencies will now work together at one checkpoint instead of stopping passengers multiple times. Officials say the goal is to close security gaps, curb touting, and make passenger movement more efficient. The change is also designed to bring Nigeria’s airports closer to international best practices in aviation security. According to Ahmadu Danjuma, Acting Regional Manager (North Central) for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, new X ray machines and L3 scanning devices have been installed […]

FG designates Ikom Dam as strategic national asset

The Federal Government has declared the Ikom Dam in Cross River State a strategic national asset, underscoring its importance for water supply, irrigation, power and food security. Officials said the dam and its associated Boki Ikom Irrigation Project are central to plans to open up more than 2,000 hectares of arable land for large scale, commercially viable farming in the region. The Cross River Basin Development Authority described the scheme as a key intervention that can attract private and foreign investment and boost agro industrial value chains. By granting the “strategic asset” status, the government aims to prioritise funding, maintenance and security for the dam and related infrastructure. The move aligns with a wider policy shift that treats major dams and irrigation projects as critical to national development, climate resilience and rural employment. The Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation […]

FG weighs options as Iran war pushes petrol above N1,000

The Federal Government is assessing its economic and diplomatic options as the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel begins to hit Nigerians through higher fuel prices and fresh pressure on the economy. Officials are closely tracking developments in the Middle East, where attacks on oil facilities, shipping disruptions and tensions around strategic waterways have driven up global crude prices. The conflict has already pushed Brent crude well above Nigeria’s 2026 budget benchmark, raising both risks and opportunities for Africa’s largest oil producer. On the domestic front, petrol prices have crossed or neared N1,000 per litre in many locations, with queues reappearing at filling stations across parts of the country. Marketers and analysts link the spike to higher international crude and freight costs, as well as supply constraints and the impact of the conflict on global refinery output and […]

FG begins payment of delayed February salaries, blames technical glitch

The Federal Government has commenced payment of February 2026 salaries to treasury funded workers after days of delay that sparked anxiety among civil servants. The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation said the delay was caused by a technical glitch in the salary payment system, which has now been fixed, with measures put in place to prevent a recurrence. According to the statement by OAGF spokesperson Bawa Mokwa, payment of February salaries started on Monday, March 2, with workers expected to receive alerts as banks process the transactions. The office also confirmed that one month out of the outstanding wage award arrears has been paid, as part of efforts to cushion the impact of economic reforms on federal workers. Officials noted that federal salaries are usually credited before the end of the month and apologised for the inconvenience caused by […]

Fed Govt begins implementing salary agreement with ASUU

The Federal Government has begun implementing key welfare provisions in its 2025 renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Education Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa said the government has fulfilled its obligation to implement a 40 percent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, effective from January 1, 2026. He explained that some federal universities have already reflected the new rates in lecturers’ pay, while others are being directed to fully cascade the approved increment across their payroll so all eligible academic staff benefit. The minister added that the increase has been captured and circularised by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and that its inclusion in the 2026 budget is now a formal statutory process. Beyond CAA, Alausa said implementation of the Consolidated Tools Allowance (CATA) and other agreed welfare components is also […]
