The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has declared an indefinite nationwide strike to begin at 12 00 a m on Tuesday April 7 2026. The decision followed an extraordinary NEC meeting where the body reviewed government’s handling of its long standing demands.
NARD said the action became inevitable after repeated failures by the Federal Government to honour agreements and implement terms reached in earlier negotiations. The doctors accused authorities of making promises on paper without translating them into concrete improvements on the ground.
Key issues listed include unpaid salary and promotion arrears for many members across teaching and specialist hospitals. The association is also demanding improved working conditions, implementation of agreed allowances and adequate staffing to reduce excessive workload.
Resident doctors say the current situation is pushing many colleagues to burnout or forcing them to leave the country, worsening brain drain in the health sector. They argue that poor welfare and dilapidated infrastructure directly affect the quality and safety of care Nigerians receive in public hospitals.
NARD stressed that its demands are not selfish or politically motivated but aimed at saving the country’s collapsing health system. The group said it regrets the hardship patients will face but insists that a functional health system requires doctors who are properly supported and equipped to do their jobs.
Hospitals across the country are expected to scale down services once the strike begins, with consultants and a few other cadres likely left to run skeletal emergencies. NARD said it remains open to genuine dialogue, but the strike will continue until there is firm, verifiable action on its core demands.
