The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has dismissed claims that it has reached a wage agreement with the Federal Government and has reaffirmed its threat to begin an indefinite strike from April 30 if talks are not concluded.
In a communiqué issued after a Special National Executive Council meeting held on April 18 in Abuja, the union said renegotiation of its agreement with government is still ongoing despite seven meetings since October 2024. It condemned a letter circulating in public that suggested the president had approved a 30 percent increase in allowances as misleading and a violation of collective bargaining.
The communiqué signed by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim warned that the union will not accept any outcome below what has been mutually discussed during the renegotiation process. It insisted that fairness, due process and respect for collective bargaining principles must guide the final agreement.
SSANU also restated its joint ultimatum with the Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions under the Joint Action Committee. The two unions have given the Federal Government until April 30 to conclude talks or face an indefinite, comprehensive and total industrial action across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Ibrahim explained that non teaching staff play a vital role in the running of universities and inter university centres. He noted that they handle admissions, process results, mobilise students for NYSC, manage health services and provide security, questioning why they should be treated as second class workers.
The NEC urged members to remain calm, vigilant and united while the leadership continues negotiations. It passed a vote of confidence in Ibrahim and pledged to keep defending the rights and welfare of members. The union also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to listen to the voices of workers and ensure a fair resolution.
