FIFA holds talks with Iran over 2026 World Cup participation

FIFA has invited officials from the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) for talks over the country’s participation at the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The meeting is expected to take place at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich and comes amid heightened political tensions and questions over Iran’s ability and willingness to play matches on U.S. soil. Iran had earlier hinted it might withdraw from the tournament following military clashes with the U.S. and concerns over travel restrictions, visas and security for players and officials. Despite this, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly insisted that Iran will participate, stressing at the FIFA Congress that “of course Iran will be participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026” and will play in the United States. Amnesty Warns 2026 World Cup Could Become Stage For Repression

Amnesty International has warned that the 2026 FIFA World Cup could turn into a stage for repression in the United States, Canada and Mexico if urgent human rights steps are not taken. In a new report titled Humanity Must Win, the group says fans, players, journalists, workers and local communities all face significant risks. FIFA has promised a safe, welcoming and inclusive tournament where everyone can exercise their rights. But Amnesty says this pledge contrasts sharply with current realities in the three host nations, especially the United States, which will stage most of the 104 matches. The report describes the US as facing a human rights emergency under President Donald Trump, citing mass deportations, aggressive immigration raids and what it calls paramilitary style operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to Amnesty, more than 500,000 people were deported in 2025 […]

Infantino backs high 2026 World Cup ticket prices

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has defended the much-criticised ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup, calling demand for the tournament “absolutely crazy”. He said organisers have received about 150 million ticket requests in just two weeks, far above historic levels for the competition. Speaking at the World Sports Summit in Dubai, Infantino explained that all revenue from the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada will be reinvested into football worldwide. He argued that FIFA is the only global body that funds football development in many countries and that these funds keep the game alive in around 150 nations. His comments follow anger from fan groups, who have described the 2026 prices as extortionate compared to previous tournaments. In response to the backlash, FIFA announced that a limited number of tickets would be available at 60 dollars to […]

President Trump called the ad "fake" and "crooked," claiming it misrepresented Reagan's views, and announced he was ending trade negotiations with Canada. In response, Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated the ad would be pulled on Monday to allow talks to restart.
