FIFA has invited officials from the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) for talks over the country’s participation at the 2026 World Cup, which will be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The meeting is expected to take place at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich and comes amid heightened political tensions and questions over Iran’s ability and willingness to play matches on U.S. soil.
Iran had earlier hinted it might withdraw from the tournament following military clashes with the U.S. and concerns over travel restrictions, visas and security for players and officials. Despite this, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has repeatedly insisted that Iran will participate, stressing at the FIFA Congress that “of course Iran will be participating in the FIFA World Cup 2026” and will play in the United States.
Reports say FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström will lead the discussions, offering assurances that Iran’s team and delegation will be granted the necessary entry and protection to compete. The talks will also address Tehran’s concerns over potential discrimination, fan safety and respect for Iranian cultural and religious norms during the tournament.
Iran has already qualified for the expanded 48‑team finals and has been drawn in a group that includes New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt. However, the FFIRI has set out a series of conditions and demands, insisting that participation must not come “at the expense of our beliefs, culture and principles” and that host nations must address their concerns.
FIFA is keen to avoid a late political crisis that could overshadow the first 48‑team World Cup and complicate planning for match venues and scheduling. The governing body is therefore pushing for a clear, public commitment from Iran to take part under agreed guarantees, framing the World Cup as a platform for unity despite geopolitical tensions.

I feared my career had stalled three years before AMVCA win – Actress Linda Ejiofor
Nollywood actress Linda Ejiofor has revealed that she once feared her acting career had stalled, three years before her historic double win at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). She said she went through a period of deep anxiety when quality roles seemed to dry up and she worried that the industry had moved on from her. According to Ejiofor, she took those concerns to God in prayer, asking specifically for a role that would challenge her and reignite her passion for acting. That prayer was eventually answered with two powerful projects – “The Serpent’s Gift” and “The Herd” – which would later change the trajectory of her career. At the 12th AMVCA, Linda made history as the first actress to win both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress on the same night. She clinched Best Lead […]

I was stereotyped in my early acting years – Actress Bolaji Ogunmola
Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has opened up about the challenges she faced in her early years in the movie industry, saying she was heavily stereotyped because of her looks. She revealed that producers and directors often judged her by her dark skin and curvy body, boxing her into a narrow range of roles. According to Ogunmola, many filmmakers preferred light‑skinned actresses for lead characters at the time, while she was frequently considered only for supporting or “side chick” roles. “It was almost like they wanted to put me in a box,” she recalled, noting that her body type was used as an excuse to limit the kind of characters she could play. The actress said these stereotypes made it difficult to show her full range as a performer and slowed her journey to more complex, leading roles. Over time, however, […]

Coming off the bench in the decisive game, he helped turn the tide for the Hoops as they secured the win needed to finish top of the table and extend their dominance in Scotland. Chelsea appoint Xabi Alonso as coach on four-year deal
Chelsea have appointed Spanish tactician Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year deal, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the club’s next head coach. The 44-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder will take charge from July 1, 2026, after agreeing a contract that runs until 2030. Alonso has been out of work since his brief spell in charge of Real Madrid ended in January, but his reputation remains high after previously guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an historic unbeaten Bundesliga title. Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, identified him as their top target following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior and moved quickly to finalise personal terms. Reports say Alonso sought clear assurances over Chelsea’s transfer strategy and the extent of his authority before committing to the project. His title as manager rather than just head coach is seen as a significant […]

Trump says Xi agrees Iran must open strait, China says war shouldn’t have started
U.S. President Donald Trump says Chinese President Xi Jinping has agreed that Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but there is still no clear sign that Beijing will directly pressure Tehran to do so. Trump spoke while flying back from Beijing after two days of talks with Xi, where the crisis over Iran and global oil supplies dominated discussions. Iran has effectively shut the vital waterway, which previously carried about one‑fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, following joint U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28. The disruption has triggered the biggest oil supply shock in history and sent energy prices soaring, piling pressure on economies already struggling with slow growth. Trump said both leaders shared the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and of restoring safe passage through the strait. He also revealed […]

O’Neill: Iheanacho has been terrific
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has described Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho as “terrific” following a string of decisive performances in the Scottish Premiership title race. The Nigerian forward has come up big for the Hoops in recent weeks, scoring late winners and crucial goals despite limited minutes and earlier injury problems. Iheanacho grabbed the headlines with a dramatic 99th-minute penalty in Celtic’s 3–2 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park, keeping their championship hopes alive heading into the final day. Before that, he netted the match-winner in a 2–1 win over Hibernian, taking his tally to four goals in his last five appearances across all competitions. “Iheanacho has been terrific for us with the little cameo roles that he’s done,” O’Neill told BBC Scotland after the Motherwell game. “He’s had a really frustrating time this season with hamstring problems, but he […]

Arbeloa: I’ll be happy if Mourinho returns as Real Madrid coach
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa has said he would be happy if his former manager José Mourinho returned to the Bernabéu amid intense speculation linking the Portuguese tactician with the job. Reports in Spain and Portugal claim club president Florentino Pérez is seriously considering bringing back Mourinho as head coach after a trophyless season. According to Spanish outlet The Objective, one scenario being explored would see Mourinho installed as first-team manager with Arbeloa staying on as his assistant, effectively recreating their close relationship from the early 2010s. Sources close to the former right-back say he is open to such an arrangement and “would not mind” working under his old boss if it benefits the club. Speaking recently about the rumours, Arbeloa brushed aside any suggestion that he feels threatened by Mourinho’s possible return. He has consistently described the Benfica coach […]

Veteran forward Son Heung-min has been named to lead South Korea’s 26-man squad to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his fourth appearance at football’s biggest tournament. The 33-year-old captain, now playing for Los Angeles FC after leaving Tottenham Hotspur last year, will once again be the focal point of the Taeguk Warriors’ attack. Head coach Hong Myung-bo unveiled the roster in Seoul on Saturday, confirming that South Korea will rely on a blend of experience and emerging talent in North America. The squad includes Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Lee Kang-in and Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae, who are expected to form the core around Son in midfield and defence. Arbeloa told me I’ve been demoted to fourth striker – Mbappé
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has claimed that head coach Álvaro Arbeloa told him he is now only the fourth-choice striker at the club. The France captain made the remark after starting on the bench in Los Blancos’ 2–0 La Liga win over Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabéu. Mbappé, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, insisted he was fully fit and ready to start the match. “I’m 100% fine. I didn’t play because, for the coach, I’ve been the fourth-choice striker behind (Franco) Mastantuono, Vini and Gonzalo,” he told reporters in the mixed zone. The 27-year-old explained that Arbeloa opted to start Vinícius Júnior and youngster Gonzalo García in attack, with teenage sensation Mastantuono also ahead of him in the pecking order. “I was ready to start, but Arbeloa informed me that I am now the fourth striker.
