Tight security as Tinubu heads to NASS to present 2026 budget

Security has been significantly tightened around the National Assembly Complex in Abuja as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu prepares to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives. Extra armed policemen have been deployed to all main entry points, including the MOPOL Gate, the Villa Gate and the Annex Gates.​ Access to the complex has been strictly restricted to accredited persons. Tinubu asks lawmakers to extend 2025 budget to March 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked the National Assembly to extend the implementation of the 2025 budget from December 31, 2025 to March 31, 2026. He also wants approval to consolidate the capital components of the 2024 and 2025 budgets as part of wider fiscal reforms.​ Tinubu made the request in a letter dated December 18, which was read at Friday’s plenary by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen. Fresh questions have emerged over the onward journey of the Nigerian Air Force C 130 aircraft that made an emergency landing in Burkina Faso while heading to Portugal for maintenance. Burkina Faso frees detained Nigerian aircraft and 11 troops

The Federal Government has confirmed the release of the Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft and 11 soldiers who were detained in Burkina Faso after a forced landing.​ The confirmation came on Wednesday night from the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said the aircraft and personnel had been released. He simply stated that they had been freed following diplomatic efforts.​ Their release followed a meeting in Ouagadougou between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Burkina Faso’s junta leader, Ibrahim Traoré. The Nigerian oil and gas industry has been thrown into uncertainty following the resignation of the chief executives of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, Engr Gbenga Komolafe, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Engr Farouk Ahmed. Both NUPRC and NMDPRA are responsible for enforcing petroleum laws, regulations and guidelines in the upstream and downstream sectors. The Supreme Court has upheld the President’s constitutional power to declare a state of emergency in any state where there is a threat of breakdown of law and order or a slide into chaos and anarchy.
