Obi challenges Tinubu over failed power promise after new grid collapse

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has questioned President Bola Tinubu over his campaign promise to deliver steady electricity, following another collapse of Nigeria’s national grid in January 2026. In a statement posted on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi recalled Tinubu’s 2022 campaign pledge that if he failed to provide stable power in his first four years in office, Nigerians should not vote for him for a second term. He said the recent power failures clearly contradict that promise and should concern all Nigerians. Obi noted that the national grid had already collapsed twice in January 2026, even before the end of the month, and about twelve times in 2025. He described the frequent collapses as a sign of deep problems in the power sector, despite repeated assurances from the government. He also criticised President Tinubu’s frequent […]

APC flags hoisted at Kano Govt House as Gov Yusuf prepares defection

APC flags have been hoisted at the Kano State Government House, signalling a major political realignment as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf completes his move from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Vanguard reporters observed the flags flying at the complex on Monday, ahead of the governor’s expected formal defection. Yusuf, the only governor elected on the NNPP platform in 2023, recently resigned from the party, citing “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” in a letter addressed to the Diso‑Chiranchi ward chairman in Gwale Local Government Area. His resignation followed a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja and has set off a wave of defections in Kano. So far, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly have dumped the NNPP for the APC, including the Speaker, in […]

2027: Musawa warns APC against dropping Northern Muslim running mate

Minister of Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against altering President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 presidential ticket in a way that removes a Northern Muslim running mate. She said such a move could cost the ruling party vital support across the core North. Speaking on Seun Okinbaloye’s Mic On Show, Musawa addressed debates over reviewing the Muslim–Muslim ticket used in 2023. She argued that dropping Vice President Kashim Shettima or replacing him with a non‑Northern Muslim would create serious political complications, given regional sensitivities. “If there is no Hausa, Fulani or Kanuri Muslim on that ticket, it creates a hurdle. That is the reality of the way people think,” she said, stressing that electoral politics in the North is shaped by long‑standing social and political structures. She listed Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi, […]

Tinubu okays carbon market framework, eyes $3bn yearly inflow by 2030

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the full rollout of Nigeria’s national carbon market framework, a landmark climate policy projected to generate up to $3 billion in annual revenue by 2030 from carbon credits and emissions trading. The move aims to position Nigeria as a leading player in global carbon markets while boosting non oil revenue and supporting the energy transition. Under the framework, the Federal Government will establish a national carbon registry, mandate emissions reporting by companies and introduce phased compliance measures aligned with Nigeria’s climate commitments. These measures are tied to interim emissions reduction targets up to 2035 and the long term goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2060. To attract investors, the policy provides generous incentives, including tax exemptions on carbon credit earnings for up to 10 years, accelerated capital allowances for low carbon assets and […]

Tinubu broke education pact, abandoned Nigerian students abroad, Atiku alleges

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of breaching Nigeria’s bilateral education agreements and abandoning more than 1,600 scholarship students overseas. He described the situation of the affected scholars as a national disgrace, alleging that many are facing hunger, eviction and severe hardship in their host countries. In a statement shared on his social media pages, Atiku claimed that students under the Bilateral Education Agreement scheme have gone months without receiving their stipends. He said monthly allowances were first cut by over half and then stopped altogether in 2025, leaving each student reportedly owed thousands of dollars in arrears. The BEA programme, launched in the 1990s, is based on education pacts with countries such as Russia, China, Morocco and Hungary. Atiku argued that failing to honour these obligations not only endangers students’ welfare but also damages […]
