Senator Ali Ndume has warned that growing dissatisfaction in the North over the current state of governance could have serious electoral consequences if not addressed.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, the Borno South lawmaker said many northerners are unhappy and their frustration may eventually be reflected in their votes. He said anyone claiming there is no grumbling in the region is not being truthful.
Ndume stressed that President Bola Tinubu still has time to turn things around but must urgently respond to the concerns being raised, especially on security, the economy and representation.
He revealed that northern elders have previously met with President Tinubu to table their concerns. According to him, the President appeared prepared at those meetings and invited key appointees from the North for a robust discussion. However, Ndume said the follow up engagements the President promised never took place.
While absolving Tinubu of being the main problem, Ndume blamed the President’s close circle, saying many of those around him lack political experience and grassroots connection. He argued that Tinubu succeeded as Lagos governor because he had strong, competent advisers, but that many of such people have now been sidelined.
Ndume criticised some presidential aides for living in isolation from ordinary Nigerians. He said they only know elite areas like Ikoyi and Victoria Island and frequently travel abroad where their families live, describing them as people who do not fully understand the country.
According to him, instead of surrounding himself with a team that can look him in the face and tell him the truth, the President has allowed people who “do not know politics” to dominate his inner circle.
Ndume warned that if the current grievances, particularly in the North, are not addressed, the discontent could deepen and show strongly at the polls in future elections.
