Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has praised President Bola Tinubu’s approach to tackling insecurity, saying recent military gains show that his strategies are beginning to yield results. He noted that coordinated operations by the armed forces and other security agencies have led to the killing and arrest of bandits and terrorists across several northern states in recent weeks. Ndume singled out Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for special commendation, describing him as a model for other northern governors. He said Zulum’s constant presence in rural communities, investment in local security outfits and support for the military have greatly complemented federal efforts against insurgents. The senator urged other northern governors to adopt a more hands on style similar to Zulum’s by regularly visiting troubled areas, supporting security agencies and addressing the root causes of violence. He argued that stronger cooperation between […]

The Federal Government has called for stronger Pan African collaboration to tackle the continent’s growing cancer burden, warning that cancer now kills more Africans each year than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, made the call in Luxor, Egypt, while addressing delegates at the Africa Oncology Collaboration and Innovation Forum, organised with Egyptian oncology institutions, African networks and development partners. Citing GLOBOCAN 2022 data, he said Africa recorded 1.18 million new cancer cases and 763,843 deaths, describing this as an unacceptable burden that demands coordinated continental action. Salako noted that Nigeria, Egypt and South Africa account for the highest cancer numbers in Africa, with Nigeria alone responsible for over 10.5 per cent of the continent’s total cancer burden, driven by lifestyle changes, ageing, late diagnosis, weak screening and gaps in […]

Trump’s Moves on Nigeria Driven by Oil, Says Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare has claimed that President Donald Trump’s decision to list Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and speak of Christian genocide is tied to a strategic push for Nigeria’s oil and other key assets. Speaking during a State of the Nation Address in Lagos, he said the Trump administration sees Nigeria’s oil wealth, mineral resources, real estate and role in emerging technologies as central to its foreign and economic agenda. Bakare said he believed Trump’s interest in Nigeria was confirmed by a vision he had shortly after Trump’s 2024 election victory, in which the US leader arrived in Lagos dressed in traditional Arab clothing and declared, “We are here now.” He interpreted this as a sign of deep economic and geopolitical interest linked to Middle East politics, oil and gas, property and Nigeria’s growing technology ecosystem, with […]
