Security tops Tinubu’s N58.18trn 2026 budget priorities

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made security the single biggest priority in the proposed N58.18 trillion 2026 federal budget, earmarking N5.41 trillion for defence and internal security. The allocation is the largest for any sector and marks the third straight year that security has taken the top share of national spending under his administration. Presenting the “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity” to a joint session of the National Assembly, Tinubu said security remains the foundation of economic growth, investment and social stability. He argued that without peace, efforts to expand jobs, infrastructure, education and health will not succeed. Under the proposal, defence and security will receive N5.41 trillion, ahead of infrastructure (N3.56 trillion), education (N3.52 trillion) and health (N2.48 trillion). The Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, says bandits and other criminal elements operating in and around the Federal Capital Territory will face even tougher military pressure in 2026. Onasanya spoke in Abuja at the summit of Aso Rock during the brigade’s annual ascent of the rock, an exercise that marks the end of its training year and tests troops’ fitness, endurance and cohesion. CSO Asks Tinubu To Redeploy Communications Minister Over Bandits Comment

A civil society organisation has called on President Bola Tinubu to redeploy the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, following his public remarks on how bandits use telecommunications systems to evade tracking. The group expressed concern that the minister’s explanations could embolden criminals and downplay government responsibility in closing security loopholes. Tijani had stated on a television programme that bandits and terrorists exploit poor network coverage and employ sophisticated “call hopping” technology, bouncing calls off multiple towers in remote areas to avoid detection. He also suggested that some widely held claims about unregistered SIM cards remain unverified and technically complex. In its reaction, the CSO argued that such comments were insensitive at a time when Nigerians are dealing with frequent kidnappings, ransom demands and rural attacks. The group insisted that the minister should prioritise concrete actions to […]

He said Zulum’s constant presence in rural communities, investment in local security outfits and support for the military have greatly complemented federal efforts against insurgents. The senator urged other northern governors to adopt a more hands on style similar to Zulum’s by regularly visiting troubled areas, supporting security agencies and addressing the root causes of violence. No more ransom, no talks with terrorists, says Defence Minister

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa has declared that there should be no more negotiations or ransom payments to terrorists in Nigeria, insisting that such actions only strengthen criminal groups. Speaking during his ministerial screening and in comments highlighted by the Ministry of Defence, Musa warned that paying ransom gives terrorists money and time to regroup, re-arm and plan fresh attacks, noting that some communities that negotiated were later attacked again. He urged all levels of government to adopt a united position against negotiating with terrorists or bandits, stressing that ransom payments must stop if Nigeria is serious about ending kidnappings and insurgency. Musa also pointed out that Nigeria’s banking and digital payment systems can be used more effectively to trace ransom money and disrupt terrorist financing networks when supported by a unified national database and stronger security coordination. The minister […]
