The Commander of the Guards Brigade, Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, says bandits and other criminal elements operating in and around the Federal Capital Territory will face even tougher military pressure in 2026. He warned that the area will not be allowed to become a safe haven for criminals.
Onasanya spoke in Abuja at the summit of Aso Rock during the brigade’s annual ascent of the rock, an exercise that marks the end of its training year and tests troops’ fitness, endurance and cohesion. He said 2025 had been particularly demanding, with the brigade taking on more security tasks beyond its core duty of protecting the president.
Despite the pressure, he said the formation kept Abuja and its environs largely safe through sustained operations and close collaboration with other security agencies. He listed the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence, Department of State Services, as well as support from the Navy and Air Force, as key partners in maintaining security.
Onasanya disclosed that the brigade carried out several clearance operations against bandits and criminal gangs in parts of the FCT and neighbouring states. Areas such as Bwari, Abaji, Gwagwalada, Toto and parts of Niger State recorded arrests, recovery of weapons and the neutralisation of some suspects.
He added that attempts to destabilise the FCT during the year were quickly contained and those behind them “kept where they belong.” He assured residents that the brigade will continue to give its best to support national security in the coming year.
Looking ahead, Onasanya said the Guards Brigade remains a highly motivated unit of the Nigerian Army. He warned that anyone or any group planning to use its area of responsibility as a base for crime in 2026 will be decisively dealt with.
Addressing officers and soldiers at the summit, he praised their discipline, professionalism and resilience during what he described as a challenging year. He urged them to remain focused, maintain high standards and be ready for increased operational demands in 2026.
The climb ended with a safe and orderly descent from Aso Rock, with commanders emphasising safety and the goal of zero casualties during the exercise.
