10 African teams qualify for 2026 World Cup

Africa will have a record 10 teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. This is the first time the continent will present 10 representatives at a World Cup tournament, following FIFA’s expansion to 48 teams. The African teams that have qualified are Algeria, Cape Verde, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia. DR Congo clinched the final African slot after a tense 1 0 extra time victory over Jamaica in the intercontinental play off. These teams secured their tickets through the Confederation of African Football qualifying series, with nine earning automatic places and DR Congo taking the last spot via the play off route. Football analysts say the expanded African presence gives the continent a greater chance to reach the latter stages of the […]

Italy misses World Cup again

In the heart of Rome, frustration is growing among football fans after Italy’s latest setback on the international stage. Standing near a newsstand, 65-year-old Tommaso Silvestri scans the headlines, which describe the situation in stark terms — from “disaster” to “scandal.” For him, the problem is clear. “We’ve failed completely,” he says. “Our players couldn’t even hit the target. The great era of Italian football is over.” On Tuesday evening in Zenica, the Italy national football team missed out on World Cup qualification for the third time in a row. They were defeated 4-1 on penalties by Bosnia and Herzegovina after playing much of the match with ten men. Since lifting the World Cup in 2006, Italy has struggled to maintain consistent success, aside from its unexpected triumph at Euro 2021 against England at Wembley. The defeat has triggered strong […]

Manchester United Legend Nicky Butt Wants Osimhen At Old Trafford

Manchester United legend Nicky Butt has called on the club’s hierarchy to make a summer move for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. Butt believes the Galatasaray forward is the kind of powerful, complete number nine United need to lead the line at Old Trafford. Speaking in recent interviews, the former midfielder argued that while current striker Benjamin Sesko has potential, he is not yet ready to carry the team’s attack on his own. He described Osimhen as quick, strong and aggressive, with the ability to run in behind, hold up play and score different types of goals, including headers. Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray from Napoli in a record deal last summer, has continued his prolific form in Turkey with 19 goals in 29 appearances this season. Butt said players from the Turkish Super Lig are generally “gettable” in the transfer market […]

International Friendly: Jordan Deny Eagles With Late Equaliser

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were denied back to back friendly wins after being held to a 2–2 draw by Jordan in Antalya, Turkey. Nigeria came from behind to lead 2–1, but a late equaliser from substitute Mohammad Al Daoud ensured the game ended all square. Jordan drew first blood in the 17th minute through Mousa Al Tamari, who finished off a well worked move to beat the Nigerian defence. Nigeria responded before the half hour mark when captain on the night Moses Simon drilled home to restore parity. Debutant Emmanuel Fernandez then gave the Eagles the lead shortly before halftime, arriving unmarked at the back post to slot in Nigeria’s second. The West Africans looked in control for large spells and created chances to extend their advantage but failed to convert. Jordan stayed in the contest and were rewarded […]

Iwobi, Simon Close To 100 Caps As Super Eagles Target Win Over Jordan

Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon are closing in on historic 100 cap milestones as the Super Eagles take on Jordan in an international friendly in Antalya, Turkey. Iwobi is set to earn his 98th appearance for Nigeria, while Simon is on track for his 97th cap. Only a handful of Nigerian players have ever reached the ‘centurion’ mark, including Joseph Yobo, Ahmed Musa and John Obi Mikel. Iwobi and Simon are now within touching distance of joining that elite group if they stay fit and remain in the plans of head coach Eric Chelle. The Super Eagles go into the clash against Jordan on the back of a 2 1 win over Iran in their first game of the Antalya four nation invitational tournament. Moses Simon and Akor Adams scored the goals in that match, extending Nigeria’s unbeaten run in […]

Cucurella Says He Wouldn’t Have Sacked Maresca Mid Season

Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella says he would not have sacked Enzo Maresca in the middle of the season, insisting the club needed patience with the Italian coach. Speaking while on duty with Spain, he argued that constant managerial changes have hurt Chelsea’s progress. Cucurella said the team became more consistent under Maresca after working together for about 18 months. He explained that by the final months of the Italian’s tenure, players understood the system so well that they were playing almost instinctively. Time is crucial, he added, pointing to Arsenal as an example of a club that stuck with Mikel Arteta for years before reaping rewards. According to him, Chelsea have instead “paid the price” for inexperience and a lack of long term thinking in their project. Reflecting on Maresca’s January exit, Cucurella said he would have waited until […]

Ghana Sack Coach Otto Addo Just 72 Days Before 2026 World Cup

Ghana have sacked head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Ghana Football Association announced that it had parted ways with the Black Stars manager with immediate effect. The decision came hours after Ghana lost 2 1 to Germany in a friendly match in Stuttgart. That defeat followed a heavy 5 1 loss to Austria in Vienna a few days earlier, extending the team’s miserable run of pre tournament form. In a brief statement, the GFA said: The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team, Otto Addo, effective immediately. It did not immediately name a replacement or give detailed reasons beyond the recent results. Under Addo’s second spell in charge, which began in March 2024, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 […]

AFCON To Expand To 28 Teams As CAF Unveils New Reforms

The Africa Cup of Nations is set to be expanded from 24 to 28 teams as part of major reforms announced by the Confederation of African Football. CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed the decision after an executive committee meeting in Cairo. Motsepe said the expansion aims to increase participation and competitiveness across the continent. He noted that more countries will now have a realistic chance of reaching the finals, giving fans and players in smaller nations a bigger stake in the tournament. The CAF president linked the changes to a broader restructuring of African football. Alongside the AFCON expansion, CAF plans to launch an African Nations League and adjust the international calendar to give national teams more meaningful games. Motsepe also promised regulation changes to rebuild trust in referees, VAR operators and judicial bodies. CAF has been under pressure after […]

Amnesty Warns 2026 World Cup Could Become Stage For Repression

Amnesty International has warned that the 2026 FIFA World Cup could turn into a stage for repression in the United States, Canada and Mexico if urgent human rights steps are not taken. In a new report titled Humanity Must Win, the group says fans, players, journalists, workers and local communities all face significant risks. FIFA has promised a safe, welcoming and inclusive tournament where everyone can exercise their rights. But Amnesty says this pledge contrasts sharply with current realities in the three host nations, especially the United States, which will stage most of the 104 matches. The report describes the US as facing a human rights emergency under President Donald Trump, citing mass deportations, aggressive immigration raids and what it calls paramilitary style operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to Amnesty, more than 500,000 people were deported in 2025 […]
