Ghana have sacked head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Ghana Football Association announced that it had parted ways with the Black Stars manager with immediate effect.
The decision came hours after Ghana lost 2 1 to Germany in a friendly match in Stuttgart. That defeat followed a heavy 5 1 loss to Austria in Vienna a few days earlier, extending the team’s miserable run of pre tournament form.
In a brief statement, the GFA said: The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team, Otto Addo, effective immediately. It did not immediately name a replacement or give detailed reasons beyond the recent results.
Under Addo’s second spell in charge, which began in March 2024, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars have also struggled in friendlies despite having attacking talents like Mohammed Kudus and other Europe based stars.
Ghana are drawn in the same World Cup group as England and face a tough path to the knockout stages. The late coaching change has raised questions about whether a new technical team can quickly impose a clear style and restore confidence.
Reports in Ghanaian media suggest the GFA will move fast to appoint a successor, with talks already ongoing with potential candidates. Names mentioned include both local coaches and a possible foreign manager with World Cup experience.
Fans have reacted sharply to the news on social media. While some blame Addo for tactical mistakes and poor substitutions, others accuse the GFA of poor long term planning and say the timing of the sack could destabilise the team further.
Despite the turmoil, the GFA insists preparations for the tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico will continue as scheduled. Officials say the goal remains to build a competitive squad capable of surprising opponents on the world stage.
