Iwobi, Simon Close To 100 Caps As Super Eagles Target Win Over Jordan

Article arrow_drop_down

Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon are closing in on historic 100 cap milestones as the Super Eagles take on Jordan in an international friendly in Antalya, Turkey. Iwobi is set to earn his 98th appearance for Nigeria, while Simon is on track for his 97th cap.

Only a handful of Nigerian players have ever reached the ‘centurion’ mark, including Joseph Yobo, Ahmed Musa and John Obi Mikel. Iwobi and Simon are now within touching distance of joining that elite group if they stay fit and remain in the plans of head coach Eric Chelle.

The Super Eagles go into the clash against Jordan on the back of a 2 1 win over Iran in their first game of the Antalya four nation invitational tournament. Moses Simon and Akor Adams scored the goals in that match, extending Nigeria’s unbeaten run in regulation time to five games.

Chelle is expected to stick with a strong core while also testing new options. In midfield, Iwobi is tipped to start alongside captain Wilfred Ndidi, with one of Frank Onyeka, Fisayo Dele Bashiru or Raphael Onyedika likely to complete the trio.

In attack, Simon is again favoured to lead the line or operate from the left, supported by the likes of Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams or Ademola Lookman. Other attacking options in camp include Paul Onuachu, Chidera Ejuke and newcomers Philip Otele and Collins Yira Sor.

Jordan, who recently qualified for their first ever FIFA World Cup, are seen as dangerous opponents. They warmed up with an impressive 2 2 draw against Costa Rica and are using the Antalya tournament to fine tune preparations for the global showpiece.

Despite injuries to key names such as Victor Osimhen and Calvin Bassey, Nigeria’s recent form and depth have boosted confidence in the camp. A positive result against Jordan would not only extend the team’s momentum but also move Iwobi and Simon another step closer to their 100 cap dream.

Israel, Lebanon extend ceasefire as Iran peace talks stall

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their fragile ceasefire by three weeks even as U.S. efforts to secure a broader peace deal with Iran remain stuck. President Donald Trump announced the extension in Washington on Thursday after meeting the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors, saying he believed “there’s a very good chance of having peace” and calling it “an easy one” to achieve, despite recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon and renewed rocket fire from Iran backed Hezbollah. The initial truce between Israel and Lebanon had been due to expire on Sunday. At the same time, Trump signalled he is in no hurry to end the wider war with Iran, warning that “the clock is ticking” for Tehran as a third U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, arrived in the Middle East to join two other carriers already operating […]

Ghana summons South Africa’s envoy over ‘xenophobic incidents’

Ghana has summoned South Africa’s acting High Commissioner in Accra over what it describes as a series of “xenophobic incidents” targeting Ghanaian nationals. In a statement issued on Thursday, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa raised concerns after videos emerged online showing Ghanaians being harassed in parts of South Africa. The ministry cited an incident in KwaZulu Natal where a Ghanaian legal resident was confronted and told to leave South Africa and “fix his country.” The statement warned of “escalating tensions” and advised Ghanaian citizens in affected areas to remain indoors for their safety where necessary. It noted that recent anti migrant protests and intimidation had heightened fears among foreign nationals. During his meeting with South Africa’s envoy Thando Dalamba, Ablakwa recalled Ghana’s historic support for the anti apartheid struggle and stressed that unprovoked harassment […]

The Nigerian military has inaugurated a general court martial to try officers accused in an alleged coup plot, formally kicking off internal trial proceedings months after their arrest. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused personnel were brought under tight security to the Guards Brigade Scorpion Mess in Asokoro, Abuja, where the court martial is sitting. Journalists were barred from entering the courtroom, with the session held behind closed doors. Several civilian lawyers were seen arriving at the venue ahead of the inauguration, indicating that the officers are being represented by external counsel. The sitting marks the start of the military’s disciplinary process following investigations into the alleged plot. The case dates back to October 2025, when about 16 serving military personnel, including senior and junior officers, were arrested over alleged acts of indiscipline. Subsequent investigations reportedly […]

Influencer culture impacting music quality in Nigeria, says Zlatan Ibile

Afrobeats star Zlatan Ibile says the rise of influencer culture is reshaping Nigeria’s entertainment industry and affecting the overall quality of music being released. Speaking on the Afrobeats Podcast hosted by Shopsydoo, he noted that making music is no longer the preserve of professional artists, as skit makers, pranksters, TikTok creators and other social media influencers now record songs that quickly go viral. According to him, musicians once dominated celebrity culture, but influencers and content creators now share the spotlight and can turn almost any track into a hit through their online reach. “It used to be that artists were the celebrities, but now TikTokers, influencers, and content creators are celebrities. That is why you can see an influencer or skit maker drop a song and it blows up,” Zlatan said. He stressed that this shift helps explain why songs […]

Osimhen: Ex sporting director backs De Laurentiis over rejected €200m PSG offer

Former Napoli sporting director Mauro Meluso says club president Aurelio De Laurentiis was right to reject a reported €200 million joint offer from Paris Saint Germain for Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in 2023. Speaking on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, Meluso explained that De Laurentiis did not want to weaken the squad immediately after winning the Scudetto and felt that selling both star forwards at once would have sent the wrong message to the dressing room and fans. “Should Osimhen and Kvara have been sold together to PSG immediately after their third Scudetto? At that point, De Laurentiis didn’t want to weaken Napoli,” he said, insisting the decision was taken for the good of the club rather than purely financial reasons. Meluso admitted that, with hindsight, some might argue the sale should have gone through, but maintained that offloading both […]

No FIFA plans to replace Iran with Italy at World Cup

FIFA has no plans to replace Iran with Italy at this summer’s World Cup despite a proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Paolo Zampolli. Speculation over Iran’s participation had grown because of the ongoing war involving the U.S., Israel and Iran, but world football’s governing body has reaffirmed that Iran will take part as scheduled. Zampolli, an Italian‑American and long‑time Trump ally, told the Financial Times he had suggested to both Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino that four‑time champions Italy be invited to take Iran’s place at the U.S.‑hosted tournament. “I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,” Zampolli said, describing it as a “dream” to see the Azzurri at a World Cup staged in the United States. Italy failed to qualify for a third straight World Cup […]

EPL: Chelsea’s slump deepens with 3–0 loss to Brighton

Chelsea’s miserable season hit a new low on Tuesday as they slumped to a 3–0 defeat away to Brighton, further damaging their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck condemned Liam Rosenior’s side to a fifth straight Premier League loss without scoring, the first time Chelsea have suffered such a run since 1912. The result means the Blues have now lost seven of their last eight games in all competitions and won just one of their past nine league matches. Chelsea sit seventh on the table, seven points adrift of fifth placed Liverpool, with only the top five guaranteed Champions League football under the league’s current allocation. Unless they can quickly arrest their slide, Rosenior’s men risk missing out on European competition altogether. The pressure on the manager is […]

Falcons remain Africa’s best as Nigeria lasses rise to 36th in FIFA rankings

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have climbed to 36th place in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, tightening their grip as Africa’s top ranked women’s national team. The Justine Madugu led side moved up one spot from 37th after a 3 1 victory over Cameroon in a friendly match last month. Despite limited fixtures, the result was enough to boost their global standing. The ten time African champions continue to lead the continent comfortably. South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are second in Africa and 58th in the world, followed by Ghana’s Black Queens in 59th, Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in 62nd and Zambia in 64th to complete Africa’s top five. Nigeria’s rise comes in spite of recent inactivity caused by the late cancellation of planned friendlies against Cape Verde. Before that setback, the Falcons had split results in a two match friendly series against […]

Turkish Cup: Osimhen cleared for Gala comeback as Madrid join race for ace striker

Victor Osimhen is set to make his comeback tonight as Galatasaray host Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Cup quarter final at Rams Park, in a return that coincides with reports that Real Madrid have joined Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the battle for the Super Eagles striker. Osimhen only returned to full training last week after recovering from an arm injury sustained in the Champions League round of 16 clash against Liverpool, which sidelined him for four consecutive league matches. According to Turkish outlet Sabah, he is expected to feature for about 15 to 20 minutes against Gençlerbirliği as coach Okan Buruk carefully manages his workload ahead of Sunday’s high stakes Intercontinental Derby against Fenerbahçe. Galatasaray sit four points clear at the top of the Turkish Süper Lig after a 2 1 away win over Gençlerbirliği at the weekend, a game […]
