Amnesty Warns 2026 World Cup Could Become Stage For Repression

Amnesty International has warned that the 2026 FIFA World Cup could turn into a stage for repression in the United States, Canada and Mexico if urgent human rights steps are not taken. In a new report titled Humanity Must Win, the group says fans, players, journalists, workers and local communities all face significant risks. FIFA has promised a safe, welcoming and inclusive tournament where everyone can exercise their rights. But Amnesty says this pledge contrasts sharply with current realities in the three host nations, especially the United States, which will stage most of the 104 matches. The report describes the US as facing a human rights emergency under President Donald Trump, citing mass deportations, aggressive immigration raids and what it calls paramilitary style operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to Amnesty, more than 500,000 people were deported in 2025 […]

Premier League Fans Back Growing Calls To Scrap VAR

More than three quarters of Premier League fans say they want the Video Assistant Referee system scrapped. The finding comes from a new Football Supporters’ Association survey of almost 8,000 fans from all 20 top flight clubs. According to the poll, 76 percent of respondents were against the continued use of VAR. Around 97 percent said VAR has made football less enjoyable, while over 90 percent felt it has not improved the matchday experience. Supporters complained most about three issues. They cited long delays for reviews, doubts over the accuracy and consistency of decisions, and the loss of spontaneous goal celebrations. Thomas Concannon, the FSA’s Premier League network manager, said the results show a clear mood among matchgoing fans. He explained that people feel VAR takes too long, is too forensic, and strips away the emotional high of scoring. The […]

CAF General Secretary Resigns Amid AFCON Dispute

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is facing a leadership change as its general secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba, announced his resignation. His departure comes during a turbulent period for African football, marked by the decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and the last-minute postponement of the women’s tournament. In a statement, Mosengo-Omba said he was leaving with a clear conscience. "Having dispelled the suspicions cast on me, I can retire peacefully and leave CAF stronger than before," he wrote. At 66, Mosengo-Omba had exceeded the organization’s mandatory retirement age of 63, drawing criticism. He also faced allegations from staff about fostering a difficult work environment, though an internal investigation cleared him of wrongdoing. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and also a Swiss national, he became CAF general secretary in March 2021. Reuters […]

Man United Legend Nicky Butt Urges Club To Sign Victor Osimhen

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has urged his old club to go all out to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen this summer. Butt believes the Galatasaray forward has the qualities needed to lead the line and take United’s attack to a higher level. Manchester United signed Benjamin Sesko last summer, but Butt is not convinced the young Slovenian can carry the team’s goal scoring burden on his own. He acknowledged Sesko’s potential, movement, and work rate, but said the club still needs a more complete and proven centre forward. Butt described Osimhen as powerful, quick, strong, and capable of scoring different types of goals. He highlighted the Nigerian’s ability to run in behind, compete in the air, and hold up play as reasons he would fit well in the Premier League. Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray from Napoli in […]

Sabalenka Edges Gauff To Claim Second Straight Miami Open Title

World number one Aryna Sabalenka has defeated American star Coco Gauff to win her second straight Miami Open title. The Belarusian triumphed 6 2 4 6 6 3 in a tense three set final at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday. With the victory, Sabalenka completed the prestigious Sunshine Double, having also won the Indian Wells title earlier in the month. She becomes only the fifth woman to win both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season and the first to do so since Iga Swiatek in 2022. Sabalenka made a strong start in the final, breaking Gauff’s serve in the opening game and dominating the first set without facing a single break point. She overpowered the home favourite with aggressive baseline hitting and a high first serve percentage. Gauff raised her level in the second set, pushing Sabalenka into […]

Alex Iwobi Says His Parents Taught Him The Art Of Giving

Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi says his parents played a central role in teaching him the value of giving and caring for others. He explained that many of his charitable activities today are shaped by simple acts of kindness he watched at home while growing up. Iwobi recalled how his father would leave bottles of water outside for waste collectors and support people around their neighbourhood in small but consistent ways. Those little gestures, he said, showed him that helping others does not always require grand resources, only a genuine desire to make life easier for people. He noted that this mindset now guides his approach to community work. For him, success as a footballer is not just about goals and trophies, but also about using his platform to give back. In recent years, Iwobi has organised charity […]

Iran Players Honour School Strike Victims Before Nigeria Match

Iran’s national football team has paid tribute to victims of a deadly strike on a school by staging a silent protest before their friendly match against Nigeria. The game, played in Belek, Turkey, was Iran’s first outing since the wider Middle East conflict began. As the national anthem played, the Iranian players stood in a line wearing black armbands and holding children’s schoolbags in their hands. In front of them on the pitch, more schoolbags were laid out to symbolise the pupils who lost their lives. The gesture was in memory of the children and teachers killed when a school in the southern Iranian city of Minab was hit by a strike on February 28. Officials in Iran say at least 170 people, most of them schoolgirls, died in the attack. Iran has blamed the United States and Israel for […]

Senegal Parade AFCON Trophy In France After Losing Title

Senegal have paraded the Africa Cup of Nations trophy at the Stade de France in Paris, even though the team have been stripped of their 2025 title. The event took place on Saturday before a friendly match against Peru, in front of thousands of Senegalese fans living in France. The Confederation of African Football had ruled earlier in March that Senegal forfeited the AFCON final after several players walked off the pitch in protest over a penalty decision against Morocco. CAF converted Senegal’s 1–0 extra time win into a 3–0 default victory for hosts Morocco and officially awarded them the trophy. Despite the ruling, the Senegalese Football Federation maintains that the team are still the true champions of Africa. The federation went ahead with the parade in Paris to honour the players and share the moment with supporters. Senegal have […]

Henderson Defends Ben White After Wembley Boos

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has backed Ben White after the Arsenal defender was booed by some fans at Wembley. White was jeered when he came on as a substitute and again after scoring in England’s 1–1 friendly draw with Uruguay on Friday. It was White’s first England appearance since he left the 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar, a departure officially described as being for personal reasons. Reports later suggested there had been a dispute with then assistant coach Steve Holland, which fuelled debate around his absence from the national team. Henderson, who has himself been booed by England fans in the past, said White should not take the reaction too personally. He noted that some supporters may not fully understand the background and may be influenced by media narratives that are not always accurate. The midfielder stressed that the […]

Togo held by Guinea after late collapse
