2027 Presidency: Controversies Trail ADC Primaries, Court Clears Jonathan

Controversies have trailed the presidential primaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike jostle for the party’s ticket ahead of the 2027 general election. The heightened tension within the ADC followed the Federal High Court judgment delivered on Tuesday in Abuja, which cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election. Justice Peter Lifu dismissed a suit filed by Abuja-based lawyer Johnmary Jideobi seeking to bar Jonathan from running, ruling that the former president remains eligible under the 1999 Constitution as amended. Justice Lifu held that Section 137(3) of the Constitution, which restricts any person from taking the oath of office of president more than twice, could not be applied retroactively to Jonathan, who completed the tenure of the late […]

Dangote Faces Price War as NNPC Backs Fuel Imports

Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Refinery, has clarified that the refinery sold petrol to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) at a price lower than imported fuel, even as the downstream sector faces an intensifying price war. Dangote accused the NNPC and other outfits of sabotaging the $20bn refinery investment, particularly by denying it crude supplies and continuing fuel imports. He stated: “We sold to NNPC at a lower price than imported petrol.” The price war has escalated as NNPC has moved to match Dangote’s reduced petrol price, with NNPC retail outlets now selling at ₦860 per litre after Dangote cut its ex-depot price from ₦890 to ₦825 per litre. This marks the refinery’s second price reduction in the new year and third in two months. Industry analysis shows fuel importers are being squeezed, with average 30-day landing costs hitting […]

Ex-Police Commissioner Owoseni Withdraws From Oyo Accord Gov Primary

Former Lagos and Benue State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni (retd.), has reportedly withdrawn from the race for the Accord Party governorship ticket in Oyo State. Owoseni, who only recently picked the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms to join the 2027 governorship race, was expected to battle popular Ibadan-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat for the Accord ticket. He had earlier said his ambition was driven by a desire to strengthen Accord as a people-focused party and offer credible leadership rather than engage in vote-buying or political intimidation. Details of his withdrawal were still sketchy at press time, but party insiders suggest internal consultations and strategic realignments within Accord may have influenced his decision. Observers are now watching to see how his exit will shape the party’s primaries and the chances of other aspirants ahead of the 2027 governorship election […]

2027: Court Dismisses Suit Querying Jonathan’s Eligibility

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit questioning former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election. The suit, filed by Abuja-based lawyer Johnmary Jideobi in 2025, sought a declaration that Jonathan was constitutionally barred from running again, having already completed the tenure of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and then served a full term after the 2011 election. The plaintiff relied on Sections 1(1)–(3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, arguing that Jonathan had effectively been sworn in as president twice. In its judgment delivered on May 26, the court held that the constitutional amendment introducing Section 137(3), which limits anyone who has taken the oath of office of president more than twice from contesting again, could not be applied retroactively to Jonathan. The judge agreed with arguments by Jonathan’s counsel, Chris Uche […]

Nigeria at High Risk of Ebola Virus Importation – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has declared Nigeria at "high risk" of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) being imported into the country. The NCDC activated emergency response teams following the alert. The agency classified the risk as high due to ongoing Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a recently reported imported case in Uganda. NCDC Director-General stated that the agency is closely monitoring developments across the region and working with relevant stakeholders, including the Port Health Service of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to strengthen vigilance and preparedness within Nigeria's public health system. The likelihood of importation to Nigeria is high due to increased air travel between Nigeria and Uganda, especially through Kenya's Nairobi Airport, which serves as a major transit hub connecting the countries. The NCDC confirmed that […]

NCAA Suspends Debt Enforcement Against Domestic Airlines

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has temporarily suspended enforcement of its "No Pay, No Service" directive against domestic airline operators with outstanding debts. The decision follows the NCAA's earlier move on May 24, 2026, when it placed 11 domestic airline operators on a "no-pay-no-service" list amid a debt burden crisis. The suspended airlines include Air Peace, Ibom Air, Arik Air, Caverton Helicopters, and others who owed the regulator significant amounts. The NCAA had demanded payment of outstanding regulatory fees and charges before allowing these carriers to continue operations. However, the authority has now granted the airlines temporary reprieve to allow them time to restructure their debt payments. The regulator offered a 30 per cent discount on outstanding debts owed by domestic airlines as part of efforts to encourage payment and ease the financial burden on carriers. This move comes […]
