Tinubu approves ₦3.3tr plan to clear power sector debts

President Bola Tinubu has approved a ₦3.3 trillion payment plan to settle long standing debts in Nigeria’s power sector. The move targets obligations owed to power generation companies and gas suppliers that have piled up for more than a decade. According to statements from the presidency, the debts cover legacy obligations accumulated between February 2015 and March 2025 under the Presidential Power Sector Financial Reforms Programme. Following verification and reconciliation, ₦3.3 trillion was agreed as the full and final settlement amount. The intervention is expected to ease the liquidity crisis in the electricity market, improve cash flow to GenCos and gas companies, and enable more reliable generation. Gov Yusuf boasts: ‘I’ll do second term in APC, not NNPP’

Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared that he plans to seek a second term in office on the platform of the All Progressives Congress rather than the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Yusuf recently defected from NNPP to APC after a prolonged political rift with his former ally, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Reacting to a viral slogan and taunt that he would serve just “falle daya” (one term), Yusuf said the chant was only correct in relation to his stay in NNPP. “It is one term in NNPP, but we will do the second term in APC,” he said in Hausa, drawing cheers from his supporters. The governor insisted that no opposition party, including the African Democratic Congress, would be able to take Kano from him and the APC in the 2027 elections. He dismissed ADC’s chances, saying the party would […]

The association is also demanding improved working conditions, implementation of agreed allowances and adequate staffing to reduce excessive workload. Resident doctors say the current situation is pushing many colleagues to burnout or forcing them to leave the country, worsening brain […]

SSANIP asks FG renegotiation panel to hasten talks

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics has appealed to the Federal Government’s panel on the renegotiation of its agreement with unions in the polytechnic sector to speed up its work. The union said delays in concluding the process are frustrating workers and threatening the fragile peace in the system. SSANIP noted that the renegotiation of its agreement with the government has dragged on for years without clear timelines for completion. It warned that leaving key welfare issues unresolved for too long sends a wrong signal about how polytechnic workers are valued. The association urged members of the renegotiation panel to treat the process as urgent and to increase the frequency of meetings until a new agreement is reached and signed. It stressed that quick, sincere engagement will help prevent a repeat of past strikes that disrupted academic activities nationwide. […]

DHQ: Most terrorist fighters driven by fear and money, not belief

The Defence Headquarters says that more than 60 percent of terrorist fighters in Nigeria are not driven by extremist ideology but by fear, coercion and financial incentives. It explained that many of those taking part in insurgent activities were forced to join or lured with promises of money and protection. A statement from DHQ noted that only a minority of the fighters are hardcore ideologues or commanders who are deeply committed to the violent cause. The rest are described as followers who became involved due to threats to their lives, lack of options or economic hardship in their communities. According to the military, some recruits were abducted as teenagers, pressured through family connections or told their relatives would be harmed if they refused to fight. Others were attracted by the promise of regular income, food or a sense of belonging […]
