ACF warns of rising insecurity and poverty in North

The Arewa Consultative Forum has raised fresh alarm over worsening insecurity, deepening poverty and growing humanitarian crises across Northern Nigeria. Chairman Mamman Mike Osuman said terrorism, banditry and kidnapping are uprooting families and destroying livelihoods in many states. Speaking at the ACF’s 79th National Executive Council meeting in Kaduna, Osuman listed Kwara, Southern Kaduna, Katsina and Benue among areas facing rising attacks. He said repeated violence has forced people into overcrowded camps and informal settlements with poor access to food, healthcare and other basic services. Osuman warned that school closures, disrupted farming and restricted movement have further weakened rural economies. He noted that the situation has become so severe that external military support has been needed in some locations, underscoring the urgency for coordinated action. He challenged ACF members not to remain ceremonial or rhetorical but to be principled, sincere […]

Air Chief warns coup plotters will face full force of law

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, says any member of the Armed Forces found involved in plans to overthrow Nigeria’s democratic government will face the full wrath of the law. FG stops NAFDAC from enforcing sachet alcohol ban

The Federal Government has ordered the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control to stop enforcing the ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle drinks. The directive followed concerns that continuing the crackdown could harm the economy and worsen security challenges in many communities. The order came through a joint intervention by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser. Both offices warned that sealing factories and warehouses, without a fully operational National Alcohol Policy, could fuel job losses, disrupt supply chains and threaten social stability. In a statement signed by Terrence Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, the government confirmed that the National Alcohol Policy has been signed by the Ministry of Health under President Bola Tinubu’s directive. However, NAFDAC was told […]

Fresh killings, kidnappings and violent clashes in parts of Nigeria have heightened public fear over security as new intelligence reports warn that terrorist groups are stepping up drone attacks. Rowdy Senate session as clause on real time results is dropped

The Senate held a tense and rowdy plenary on Tuesday as lawmakers revisited last Wednesday’s decision on a key clause in the Electoral Act amendment bill. The uproar followed moves to alter the provision on electronic transmission of election results. Trouble began when Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno, citing Orders 1(b) and 52(6) of the Senate Standing Orders 2023, asked the chamber to rescind its earlier decision on Clause 60(3) of the bill. His motion, seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi, sought to adjust the language of the clause. According to page 45 of the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Clause 60(3) originally states that the presiding officer shall electronically transmit results from each polling unit to the IReV portal in real time after Form EC8A has been signed and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by […]

Obi leads NASS protest over real time result transmission

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi on Monday led a protest at the National Assembly demanding the restoration of real time electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The protest, tagged Occupy the National Assembly, drew hundreds of members of the Obidient Movement and civil society groups, who described the removal of the phrase real time as a setback for electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Senate had recently passed the Electoral Act 2022 Repeal and Reenactment Amendment Bill 2026, but critics faulted the decision to delete real time from sections on electronic transmission of results. They argued that this change could weaken safeguards against vote manipulation. Lawmakers have insisted that electronic transmission of results remains in the law, but protesters said removing the real time clause could allow post election interference […]
