Rowdy Senate session as clause on real time results is dropped

The Senate held a tense and rowdy plenary on Tuesday as lawmakers revisited last Wednesday’s decision on a key clause in the Electoral Act amendment bill. The uproar followed moves to alter the provision on electronic transmission of election results. Trouble began when Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno, citing Orders 1(b) and 52(6) of the Senate Standing Orders 2023, asked the chamber to rescind its earlier decision on Clause 60(3) of the bill. His motion, seconded by Senator Abdul Ningi, sought to adjust the language of the clause. According to page 45 of the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Clause 60(3) originally states that the presiding officer shall electronically transmit results from each polling unit to the IReV portal in real time after Form EC8A has been signed and stamped by the presiding officer and countersigned by […]

Obi leads NASS protest over real time result transmission

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi on Monday led a protest at the National Assembly demanding the restoration of real time electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. The protest, tagged Occupy the National Assembly, drew hundreds of members of the Obidient Movement and civil society groups, who described the removal of the phrase real time as a setback for electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Senate had recently passed the Electoral Act 2022 Repeal and Reenactment Amendment Bill 2026, but critics faulted the decision to delete real time from sections on electronic transmission of results. They argued that this change could weaken safeguards against vote manipulation. Lawmakers have insisted that electronic transmission of results remains in the law, but protesters said removing the real time clause could allow post election interference […]

Nigeria’s future must be decided by Nigerians, says ex-Canterbury Archbishop

Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rt. Rev. Justin Welby, says Nigeria’s future must be determined by Nigerians themselves, warning against any actions that undermine the country’s sovereignty. Welby spoke at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, during a public lecture titled “Building Inter-Ethnic and Religious Harmony in Nigeria: Pathways to National Unity,” held as part of activities for ABU’s 45th convocation. He stressed that defending Nigeria’s sovereignty is a shared responsibility that goes beyond government to include political, economic, spiritual, social, legal and traditional leaders. According to him, genuine inter-ethnic and inter-religious harmony requires honestly confronting Nigeria’s weaknesses, seeking help where necessary and engaging the international community with clear purpose. He cautioned that dreams of national unity would remain “vain” unless they are grounded in the nation’s history and reflect its political, economic and social realities, as well as global influences. Welby outlined […]

US lawmaker warns separatist push could hurt Christians

United States Congressman Riley M. Moore has rejected claims that Washington supports any move to break up Nigeria, warning that separatist campaigns would worsen insecurity and put Christian communities in greater danger. In a post on his verified X account, Moore said he travelled to Nigeria and held high level meetings with government officials, church leaders, aid groups and internally displaced persons to better understand the persecution of Christians. He noted that during all these engagements, the idea of dividing Nigeria “did not come up in any serious way.” Moore warned that efforts to embolden separatists would hurt Christians, especially in the North and Middle Belt. He argued that weakening Nigeria’s unity would destabilise the country, embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe both in Nigeria and across Africa. The congressman pledged to continue advocating for victims of terrorism and […]

Wike to critics: your successors will also betray you

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has warned political office holders who back acts of betrayal that their own successors will eventually turn against them. Speaking at the inauguration of the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors headquarters in Port Harcourt, Wike said any senator, representative, minister or governor who supports betrayal should expect to face the same treatment in future. He noted that second term governors trying to impose successors while backing treachery would “never survive it,” adding that such problems usually start immediately after the new governor is sworn in. Wike, who remains in a bitter rift with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, restated his commitment and that of his allies to President Bola Tinubu’s re election bid in 2027.
