The Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Muhammad Usman Zuru, has died in Egypt. He reportedly passed away on Monday night in a hospital in Cairo, where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
Zuru, who represented Zuru Constituency, was widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in the state legislature. His death has thrown the political class in Kebbi into mourning, with aides to Governor Nasir Idris confirming the development and describing it as a rude shock.
In an initial reaction, Idris’s aide on Communication and Strategy, Idris Zuru, said the Speaker’s passing is “a painful loss not only to Kebbi State but to the entire nation”. He added that the government is still gathering full details surrounding the circumstances of the death and will issue an official statement in due course.
Authorities say burial arrangements and further announcements will be made after consultations between the state government and the late Speaker’s family. Tributes have already begun to pour in from colleagues, political associates and constituents, who remember Muhammad Usman Zuru as a dedicated lawmaker and committed public servant.
