Niger State Warns Residents of Flood Risk from Dam Release

The Niger State Government has issued an urgent warning to residents living near the River Niger and River Kaduna to relocate to safer ground. This is due to the controlled release of water from four major hydroelectric dams: Kainji, Shiroro, Zungeru, and Jebba. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) stated that the dams are releasing thousands of gallons of water per minute. This will likely cause the rivers to overflow and flood surrounding communities. The Director-General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed that flooding has already begun in 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs), damaging houses, farmlands, and roads. He also warned that the ongoing rainy season could bring violent windstorms and advised people not to stand under trees during rain. This warning comes after a major flood in Mokwa LGA in May 2025 that killed over 200 people. The government […]

The Lagos State Government has denied allegations that its recent demolition of structures at the Trade Fair Complex was targeted at a specific ethnic group. The State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olumide Oluyinka, stated that the action was purely to enforce urban planning laws and ensure safety. There is nothing ethnic here; it is purely technical,” Oluyinka said during a television interview. The Commissioner revealed that traders and the complex management had been given multiple notices before the demolition. He reported that government officials were harassed and even detained for hours on two separate occasions when they tried to issue these warnings. He also blamed the complex […]

Nigeria has unveiled a groundbreaking anti-fraud framework with the official launch of the ISO 37003:2025 Fraud Control Management Systems standard, in partnership with the British Standards Institution (BSI). The landmark initiative, coordinated by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), was launched in Abuja by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, represented by Jachinma Agu, deputy director of reforms. Oduwole described the standard as more than just another regulation, but a “collective resolve to shield Nigeria’s economy from fraud — a hidden tax on development.” “Fraud increases the cost of doing business, erodes investor confidence, stifles innovation, and undermines public trust,” she said. According to the minister, ISO 37003:2025 equips organisations to identify fraud risks, apply proportionate controls, detect illicit activities, and respond swiftly to incidents. She urged both government agencies and private firms to adopt the […]
