The United States Embassy in Nigeria has assured Nigerians that visa and passport services remain unaffected by the ongoing partial shutdown of the U.S. government.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, the embassy said:
“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information. At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits.”
The embassy clarified that while consular services will proceed as scheduled, its social media updates will be limited to urgent safety and security advisories until a funding deal is reached in Washington.
The announcement comes as students, business travelers, and families in Nigeria voiced concerns that the U.S. shutdown could derail travel plans, school resumption dates, or international business engagements.
The shutdown began after Congress and President Donald Trump failed to agree on a new budget. While essential services such as the military, Social Security, and the postal service continue, hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been placed on unpaid leave.
The embassy advised Nigerians to rely on travel.state.gov for the most accurate and up-to-date information on passport and visa services, including appointment schedules and processing updates.

Bullets before ballots: insecurity threatens 2027 polls; 5,272 killed in 5 months
Seven months to the 2027 general elections, worsening insecurity across Nigeria is casting a shadow over preparations for what should be a watershed democratic exercise, with a staggering 5,272 people killed in just five months amid a resurgence of terrorist attacks and banditry. Before the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 general elections, rising insecurity across parts of Nigeria has become a major source of national concern, undermining public confidence in the electoral process. The country's security situation has continued to deteriorate with increasing attacks on civilians, schools, and military formations, raising serious questions about whether the elections will hold as scheduled. Data from the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025 showed that Nigeria recorded 171 terror attacks in 2025, representing a 43 per cent increase from the 120 attacks recorded in 2024. Terror-related deaths also rose from 513 in 2024 […]

Israel says it won’t withdraw troops from Lebanon, Syria, Gaza
Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared that Israeli troops will remain indefinitely in "security zones" in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria, marking a major policy shift in the country's military approach to border security. Katz emphasized that unlike previous instances, the Israeli military is not retreating from areas that have been cleared and taken, stating that troops will remain in the security zones acting as a buffer between adversaries and Israeli communities "regardless of whether the situation in Gaza is temporary or permanent" – similar to the approach in Lebanon and Syria. The defense minister's announcement comes after Israel unilaterally expanded its frontiers in the war unleashed by Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack, and the military strengthens its control over various occupied regions. Israel says it must maintain control of what it refers to as security zones to […]

Crude oil prices fall as US-Iran peace deal boosts global markets
Global crude oil prices have plunged after the United States and Iran reportedly reached a landmark peace agreement, easing fears of prolonged conflict in the Middle East and boosting investor confidence across global markets. Brent crude, the primary benchmark for worldwide oil prices, fell 3.4% to $87.30 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined 3.2% to $84.88 a barrel. Front-month Brent crude futures had decreased by 4.3%, settling at $86.50 per barrel, while front-month WTI crude futures also dropped by 4.3%, now at $83.76 per barrel. The market reaction follows President Donald Trump's announcement that the U.S. has agreed to a peace deal with Iran, allowing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and removing oil sanctions on Iran. This development has reduced concerns over oil supply disruptions from the region and eased fears that the conflict would […]

UK to consult on social media ban for children under 16
The UK government has launched a major public consultation on banning social media for children under 16, following Australia's first-ever ban on social media for minors implemented in December 2025. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at safeguarding the wellbeing of young people in the online world. The consultation, which opened on March 2, 2026, will run for three months until May 26, 2026, giving parents, teachers, experts and young people a chance to share their views before any final decision is made. More than 70,000 people in the UK have now had their say in the public consultation over the last three months. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has said new measures for under-16s will be brought in by the end of 2026, promising that the government won't hang around once the consultation results are in. Police report: Bandits launch over 50 attacks in one week
Nigeria’s security challenges have worsened with a new police report revealing that bandits launched more than 50 attacks across the country within the space of one week, despite the government spending about N57.78bn on security. According to the report cited by Punch, the wave of attacks included killings, abductions, raids on communities, and assaults on security formations in multiple states, underscoring the growing boldness and spread of bandit operations. Many of the incidents occurred in rural areas, where residents remain highly vulnerable due to limited security presence and delayed response times. The report noted that, in that one-week period, bandits targeted highways, villages, worship centres and farmlands, leaving scores of civilians dead, dozens abducted, and several others injured or displaced. Some attacks involved the burning of houses and public infrastructure, further deepening humanitarian and economic pressures on affected communities. Despite […]
