Nigeria’s debate over state police has moved forward after President Bola Tinubu sent a constitutional amendment bill to the Senate.
The proposal seeks to create a legal framework for state police as part of wider efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security system. Lawmakers say the plan could help states respond faster to local security challenges.
The bill was read in the Senate and referred to the Constitution Review Committee for further work. The committee is expected to examine the proposal and report back to the Senate before any final decision is made.
Supporters of state police say the current federal policing structure is no longer enough to handle the country’s growing security problems. They believe giving states more control over policing could improve response time and intelligence gathering.
However, the proposal is still subject to more legislative steps. For the bill to become part of the constitution, it must win the backing of both chambers of the National Assembly and later receive approval from state assemblies.
The discussion comes at a time when insecurity remains a major concern across the country. Many Nigerians are watching closely to see whether state police will become a reality or remain a long-running political debate.
