FAAN Promises Enhanced Ebola Preparedness at Nigerian Airports

Article arrow_drop_down

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has assured travelers and the public that Nigerian airports are now better prepared to detect and prevent the spread of Ebola virus disease.

This announcement comes after a new Ebola outbreak was confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. FAAN said it has strengthened health screening measures at all major international airports across the country.

The airports covered include Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano and Port Harcourt International Airport.

FAAN spokesperson Mrs Henrietta Yakubu said Port Health officials are now on high alert at all airports. The authority confirmed that thermal scanners are installed to check passenger body temperatures. These scanners also capture pictures of travelers for identification purposes.

Hand sanitizers are available at airport arrivals and restrooms. Passengers must fill out health declaration forms to ensure no potential disease carriers enter the country.

Yakubu noted that Nigeria has no direct flights from the Democratic Republic of Congo. However travelers from neighboring countries including Rwanda are being closely monitored. High risk passengers undergo enhanced screening procedures.

All relevant agencies including immigration customs and Port Health Services are working together to ensure passenger safety. The equipment and personnel used during the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Nigeria remain in place and fully operational.

FAAN emphasized there is no need for public alarm as preventive measures have been in place since 2014 and have now been upgraded.
