Turkey Suspends 149 Referees Over Betting Allegations

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has suspended 149 referees for allegedly betting on football matches. In a statement on Friday, the TFF announced that its disciplinary committee has issued suspensions ranging from eight to twelve months. Investigations are still ongoing for three other officials. TFF President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, "Refereeing is a profession of honour. Anyone who tarnishes that honour...will never again be involved in Turkish football." Among those suspended are 22 officials who work in the country's top league. Reports indicate that some of the referees placed an extremely high number of bets, with one individual allegedly making over 18,000 wagers. Real Madrid and Barcelona will look to move past the fallout from last weekend’s heated Clasico clash as both clubs return to La Liga action this weekend. Madrid may have triumphed 2–1 over their arch-rivals, but the match exposed underlying tensions — particularly between coach Xabi Alonso and Brazilian star Vinicius Jr. Vinicius, who reacted angrily after being substituted in the 72nd minute, apologised to fans, teammates, and club officials on Wednesday. “Today I want to apologise to all Madrid fans for my reaction to being substituted in the Clasico… I have also apologised in person to my teammates, club, and president,” said the 25-year-old, notably omitting Alonso from his statement. The incident comes amid ongoing contract negotiations, though Vinicius’ current deal runs until 2027. Despite his five league goals this season, the Brazilian has been overshadowed by Kylian Mbappe, […]

Tinubu to new service chiefs: Nigerians want results, not excuses

President Bola Tinubu has charged Nigeria’s newly appointed service chiefs to deliver concrete results in the fight against insecurity, stressing that excuses will no longer be tolerated. Speaking at the decoration ceremony for the new military leaders at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Tinubu said Nigeria is “in a hurry to celebrate peace” and urged them to act decisively against emerging threats in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South. “We must not allow these new threats to fester. We must be decisive and proactive. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head,” he said. The President noted that while the military has made significant progress—rescuing kidnapped citizens and reclaiming areas once held by terrorists—security challenges continue to evolve. “Nigerians expect results, not excuses,” Tinubu emphasized. “Security is an essential element without which everything else is rendered meaningless.” […]

Xi Jinping invites Canada PM Carney to China after years of frosty ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to visit China, marking the first official meeting between the two nations’ leaders since 2017. The invitation came during their talks at the APEC summit in South Korea on Friday. Relations between China and Canada have been strained for years, but Xi said recent efforts from both sides have shown “a recovery toward a trend of positive development.” He expressed China’s willingness to work with Canada to restore ties and deepen cooperation. Carney, accepting the invitation, acknowledged that both nations have been less engaged in recent years but said he believed “constructive and pragmatic dialogue” could help resolve their differences and build a more inclusive international system. Ties between the two countries deteriorated sharply in 2018 after the arrest of a senior Chinese telecom executive in Vancouver on a […]

Timi Frank condemns rigged elections in Tanzania, Cameroon, Ivory Coast

Political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, has condemned the recent elections in Tanzania, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast, describing them as “sham exercises” and “a disgrace to Africa.” Frank alleged that the polls were marked by manipulation, intimidation, and political violence, claiming they were selections rather than genuine elections. “These elections are a disgrace and shame to Africa,” he said. “In this 21st century, the continent should be making democratic progress, but what we see instead is the growing culture of rigging, violence, and oppression.” He urged the United Nations (UN), United States (US), and the European Union (EU) not to recognise or congratulate the outcomes of such elections, warning that failure to act could push Africa into further instability. “If nothing is done, this systematic rigging may soon lead […]

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, described the NWMP as a “practical step towards modernising Nigeria’s waste management system and mainstreaming circular economy principles.” According to Lawal, the digital platform will formalise the nation’s waste value chain by connecting waste generators, collectors, aggregators, and recyclers to end-users through a transparent, traceable, and technology-driven system. He explained that the platform will foster environmental compliance, resource recovery, and sustainable production and consumption patterns, while also […]
