Russia ends 12 year wait with Paralympic bronze

Russia has won its first Paralympic medal in 12 years after skier Varvara Voronchikhina took bronze in the women’s downhill standing event at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics. It is Russia’s first Paralympic podium since Sochi 2014, ending a long drought that followed years of bans and restrictions over state backed doping and, later, the invasion of Ukraine. For several Games, Russian athletes were either excluded entirely or only allowed to compete as neutrals without their flag or anthem. Voronchikhina, a visually impaired para alpine skier, produced a strong run on the downhill course in Cortina d’Ampezzo to secure third place and write her name into the country’s Paralympic history. Her medal comes as Russian athletes return to the Paralympics under their own flag after the International Paralympic Committee voted to lift the blanket ban but impose quota limits. […]

Reality TV star and Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna, has opened up about her difficult childhood and how it made her reject her birth name. In a recent interview, Phyna revealed that her parents originally named her Blessing, but she never liked the name because she did not feel any sense of blessing growing up. She said her early years were marked by hardship, emotional pain and a lack of support, which made the name sound like a constant contradiction to her reality. According to her, she often felt deprived of love and care and struggled with feelings of rejection within her family. Barcelona add Osimhen to striker shortlist

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has been listed among Barcelona’s key options as the Spanish giants search for a long term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. Reports in Europe say Barca’s recruitment team has drawn up a shortlist of centre forwards, with Osimhen viewed as one of the realistic targets for the summer window. Barcelona are planning for life after Lewandowski, whose role in the team is gradually being reduced as he nears the end of his contract. The club is said to be studying several profiles, but Osimhen and a few other forwards stand out because of their proven goal scoring records and age profile. According to reports, Osimhen is not currently at the very top of Barca’s list, but he is seen as a serious alternative if primary targets cannot be signed. However, any move for the Nigerian will be […]

Rivers United eye Insurance hurdle as Rangers welcome Remo Stars

The Nigeria Premier Football League title race continues this weekend with leaders Rivers United set for a tricky home game against Bendel Insurance, while closest challengers Rangers host Remo Stars in Enugu. Rivers United, who sit at the top of the table, will be looking to protect their slim lead in front of their home fans. Finidi George’s side have been strong at home this season, with an impressive record of wins and few goals conceded, but they face an Insurance team that has proved difficult for them in recent meetings. The head to head record shows that Rivers United have struggled to beat Bendel Insurance in their last five clashes, with four draws and one win for the Benin Arsenal. Their last encounter ended goalless, underlining how tight the fixture can be and how much work Rivers must do […]

Trump warns Iran will be hit very hard, may widen targets

United States President Donald Trump has warned that Iran “will be hit very hard” as he threatened to widen the list of targets in the ongoing conflict. Speaking after fresh Iranian attacks in the Middle East, Trump said on social media that some locations and individuals which had not previously been considered targets were now under serious review for “complete destruction.” He did not give specific details but linked the warning to what he called Iran’s continued “misconduct” in the region. Trump also repeated that the war against Iran would continue until Washington’s military objectives are fully achieved. These objectives include crippling Iran’s missile programme, blocking it from acquiring nuclear weapons and weakening its regional proxy networks. In earlier statements, the US leader had said Iran would face a level of force “never seen before” if it tried to retaliate […]

Nigeria’s N2.5trn mall economy hit as Shoprite shuts stores

Nigeria’s mall economy, valued at about N2.5 trillion, has suffered a major setback following the complete shutdown of Shoprite outlets across the country. The popular retail chain, which once served as the main anchor tenant for many shopping malls, had been struggling in recent months with empty shelves and partial closures before finally going dark. Shoprite’s exit leaves a huge gap for mall owners, property developers and smaller retailers who depended on the supermarket’s strong foot traffic to drive sales. Experts say vacancy rates in major malls are likely to rise, while many support businesses such as boutiques, restaurants and service outlets may see lower patronage or be forced to shut down. The closures come after a prolonged period of operational challenges for Shoprite, including high operating costs, supply chain disruptions, naira depreciation and weak consumer purchasing power. Several outlets […]

Qatar rejects Iran’s missile strike explanation

Qatar has firmly rejected Iran’s explanation for recent missile strikes on its territory, insisting that the attacks hit civilian areas and key infrastructure, not just American interests as Tehran claims. The Qatari position was delivered during a phone call between Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. According to Qatar, Iran maintained that the missiles were aimed at United States assets in the region and were not intended to target the State of Qatar. Sheikh Mohammed rejected this account, stressing that evidence on the ground shows the strikes affected civilian and residential areas, including locations near Hamad International Airport and other sensitive sites. He described the attacks as a blatant infringement of Qatar’s sovereignty and a serious threat to the safety of its people and strategic […]
