Article arrow_drop_down

Nigeria has taken a major step toward creating state police after the Senate passed a constitutional amendment bill to establish state-level police services. The bill was adopted during a plenary session and is aimed at strengthening the country’s security architecture by allowing states to run their own police alongside the federal force.premiumtimesng+2

The legislation, transmitted to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu, proposes a dual policing system made up of a Federal Police Service and State Police Services. It moves policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List, giving state governments legal authority to create, fund and manage their own police forces.facebook+3

A key provision of the bill empowers state governors to appoint Commissioners of Police for their states, subject to confirmation by the state Houses of Assembly. The nominees must be recommended by the National Police Council and meet national minimum standards set by law.bbc+1

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, described the bill as an important piece of legislation designed to address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges. Supporters argue that state police will improve local intelligence, speed up response to crime and help communities play a more active role in maintaining security.placng+3

The House of Representatives had earlier passed a similar state police bill, meeting the two thirds majority required for constitutional changes. With Senate approval now secured, the proposed amendment will be sent to the 36 state Houses of Assembly, where at least 24 must endorse it before it goes to the president for assent.premiumtimesng+1

Lawmakers and security experts say the move, if fully adopted, will mark a major shift from Nigeria’s long standing centralised policing model to a shared system between federal and state governments.

Dangote Refinery denies petrol export and re-import claims

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied claims that its petrol is being exported to Togo and then brought back into Nigeria. The company said the allegation is false and does not reflect its business operations. It explained that the claims are not supported by trade records, commercial logic, or its normal supply process. According to the refinery, its sales contracts do not allow the resale or re-importation of its products into Nigeria. The company said this rule is part of its standard compliance system. Dangote Refinery also said the alleged trade route would not make economic sense. It noted that shipping fuel from Nigeria to Lomé and back into Nigeria would add extra logistics costs that would make such a plan unprofitable. The company said no rational producer would spend additional money on shipping, storage, financing and handling only for the […]

The committee is expected to examine the proposal and report back to the Senate before any final decision is made. Supporters of state police say the current federal policing structure is no longer enough to handle the country’s growing security problems. They believe giving states more control over policing could improve response time and intelligence gathering. However, the proposal is still subject to more legislative steps. For the bill […]

El-Rufai to file no-case submission as DSS closes case

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is expected to file a no-case submission after the Department of State Services closed its case in his alleged phone tapping trial. The development came during a hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The prosecution informed the court that it would not call any more witnesses, which officially brought its case to an end. El-Rufai’s lawyer told the court that the defence would now challenge the case by arguing that the evidence presented was not enough to require the former governor to enter a defence. The matter has been adjourned for further proceedings, including the filing of the no-case submission. The case continues to draw public attention because it involves a former governor, the DSS, and allegations linked to phone interception and national security.
