Nigeria’s mall economy, valued at about N2.5 trillion, has suffered a major setback following the complete shutdown of Shoprite outlets across the country. The popular retail chain, which once served as the main anchor tenant for many shopping malls, had been struggling in recent months with empty shelves and partial closures before finally going dark.
Shoprite’s exit leaves a huge gap for mall owners, property developers and smaller retailers who depended on the supermarket’s strong foot traffic to drive sales. Experts say vacancy rates in major malls are likely to rise, while many support businesses such as boutiques, restaurants and service outlets may see lower patronage or be forced to shut down.
The closures come after a prolonged period of operational challenges for Shoprite, including high operating costs, supply chain disruptions, naira depreciation and weak consumer purchasing power. Several outlets in cities like Ilorin and Ibadan had previously shut permanently, while flagship stores in Lagos and Abuja battled with near empty shelves and dwindling customer numbers.
Retail analysts warn that the shutdown sends a worrying signal to investors about the health of Nigeria’s formal retail sector. They note that without strong anchor tenants like Shoprite, many malls will struggle to remain viable, which could discourage future investments in large scale retail and commercial real estate projects.
The situation also raises concerns about job losses. Shoprite and the businesses around its outlets collectively employed thousands of workers, and the shutdown is expected to push more people out of work at a time when unemployment and inflation are already high.
Industry stakeholders are now calling for targeted policy support to revive the retail sector, including improved access to foreign exchange, better infrastructure, and reforms to reduce the cost of doing business. They argue that stabilising the mall economy is vital for urban commerce, tax revenue and consumer confidence.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) by N75 per litre, bringing the new rate to N1,175 per litre from the previous N1,250. In a circular sent to fuel marketers on Monday, the refinery said the adjustment follows the de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East, which had affected energy prices over the past three months. The refinery also lowered its coastal price per metric tonne from N1,595,790 to N1,495,215. Both the new gantry and coastal rates will take effect from midnight on June 16, 2026.
