NIMASA Vows Tougher Monitoring, Enforcement on Vessels Over Marine Pollution
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has pledged to step up monitoring and enforcement to ensure both indigenous and foreign vessels operating in Nigerian waters strictly comply with international environmental obligations. Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, gave the charge while reiterating the agency’s determination to enforce the provisions of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI. MARPOL Annex VI — domesticated in Nigeria through the Merchant Shipping Act, 2007 — specifically addresses the prevention of air pollution from ships.
