Seven Arrested in Ghana Fuel Tanker Hijacking

Article arrow_drop_down

Seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the armed hijacking of a 5,400-litre fuel tanker in the early hours of August 7, 2025, following a coordinated police operation across the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the swift arrests came after a snap checkpoint inspection at Ablekuma Borkorborkor in Accra, where officers stopped a green pickup truck carrying three passengers.

Checkpoint Breakthrough

As police approached, two passengers jumped out, shouting that they had been attacked by armed men who hijacked their tanker near Nsawam the previous night. The driver of the pickup sped off, abandoning the third passenger, who was caught after a short chase.

The victims — two tanker drivers from Tema — told officers they had been handcuffed and transported in the pickup until the checkpoint intervention. They later confirmed the stolen tanker’s registration as GT 2493–20.

Intelligence-Led Arrests

Police intelligence led to six more arrests at Asikwa Junction near Bunso in the Eastern Region. Officers recovered:

  • The stolen tanker
  • Another tanker (GN 804–13)
  • A pumping machine suspected for fuel transfer
  • A Volkswagen Golf (GW 5185–Z) linked to the suspects

Ongoing Investigations

All seven suspects remain in custody and will be arraigned in court. The recovered tankers and exhibits are held as investigations continue.

The Ghana Police praised the quick coordination of officers involved and assured the public that the suspects will face full justice for their role in the high-profile robbery.

Court orders final forfeiture of $13m linked to Oceangate Engineering

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of 13 million dollars linked to Oceangate Engineering Oil and Gas Ltd, a company associated with businesswoman Aisha Achimugu. Justice Emeka Nwite granted the request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for the money to be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government. In his ruling, Justice Nwite held that neither Oceangate Engineering nor Achimugu was able to prove that the 13 million dollars was legitimately earned. He said there was no credible evidence before the court to support their claim that the funds came from gifts and earnings from oil and gas contracts. The judge rejected arguments by Oceangate’s lawyer, Darlington Ozurumba, who had insisted that the money was lawfully acquired. Ozurumba had argued that the funds were derived from personal gifts to Achimugu and proceeds of genuine […]
