Kenya open to 2027 AFCON delay over election tensions

Kenya’s local organising committee says it would welcome a postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations because of likely election related tensions in the region. Committee chair Nicholas Musonye told AFP that shifting the tournament to 2028 would be good for Kenya as the country heads toward general elections in August 2027. Musonye noted that past polls in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have been marked by volatility and violence, raising concerns about guaranteeing security for a major continental competition. He argued that hosting AFCON during such a period could expose fans and teams to unnecessary risks. His comments came after a report in the UK’s Guardian newspaper suggested AFCON 2027, due to be co hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, might be delayed because the three countries are not yet ready. A Confederation of African Football inspection team is […]

The opposition led by 43 year old Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, alleges widespread violence and intimidation before the vote. In one post, Kainerugaba wrote that security forces had killed 22 National Unity Platform “terrorists” in the past week and added that he was praying Bobi Wine would be the 23rd. He finished calmly from a Fisayo Dele Bashiru cross just two minutes after Uganda’s veteran keeper Denis Onyango had denied him from close range. Nigeria had dominated from the start, with Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon threatening early. Super Eagles stars one booking away from AFCON ban

Four key Super Eagles players risk suspension ahead Nigeria’s final AFCON 2025 Group C match against Uganda. Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Semi Ajayi and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali are all one yellow card away from missing the Round of 16. If Osimhen is booked in the Uganda game, coach Eric Chelle may be forced to start Paul Onuachu as striker in the first knockout match. Lookman, who has scored in both of Nigeria’s games so far, would also be ruled out of the next round if he receives another caution. Ajayi’s card situation could push Chelle to adjust his back line, possibly turning to Zaidu Sanusi to keep the defence stable. Nwabali, cautioned for time wasting against Tunisia, would be replaced by Francis Uzoho if he picks up a second yellow card. Nigeria have already beaten Tanzania 2-1 and Tunisia 3-2, […]

Chelle hints at tactical tweaks to Nigeria’s starting XI against Tunisia

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has suggested he may adjust Nigeria’s tactics and starting XI for Saturday night’s Africa Cup of Nations clash with Tunisia in Fez, Morocco. The Malian coach said he is weighing two different approaches for the high stakes Group C fixture at the Fez Stadium. Speaking at his pre match press conference on Friday, Chelle explained that he is considering a shift away from his usual possession based style. He said one option is to allow Tunisia more of the ball and then attack quickly in transition when Nigeria wins possession. Chelle added that his other option is to stick with the team’s current philosophy but make some tweaks to better handle Tunisia’s strengths. He declined to reveal his starting XI, saying fans would see his final selection when the game kicks off. Nigeria go […]

Nigeria’s data protection model now draws Africa’s interest

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission says reforms launched since 2023 have turned the country into a reference point for data protection and privacy in Africa. Officials credit President Bola Tinubu’s prompt assent to the 2023 Data Protection Act and early policy direction from NDPC chief executive Vincent Olatunji for strengthening the ecosystem. The commission said the law created clear regulatory and supervisory powers, opened new opportunities in the data economy and placed stronger obligations on organisations handling personal data. Banks, schools, hospitals, insurers, telecoms firms and online platforms have been put under stricter oversight, with some sanctioned for data breaches. According to the NDPC, Nigeria’s consistent enforcement and regulatory clarity have attracted attention from across the continent.
