81-year-old Museveni sworn in for seventh term as Uganda’s president

Article arrow_drop_down

Uganda’s long-serving leader, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has been sworn in for a seventh term in office at a ceremony held in the capital, Kampala. The 81-year-old, who has ruled the East African country since 1986, took the oath of office at the Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds on Tuesday, extending his time in power to more than four decades.

Museveni’s latest term follows his victory in the January 2026 general elections, where he was declared winner with about 71 percent of the vote by the electoral commission. The poll was marred by reports of violence, arrests of opposition supporters and an internet shutdown, drawing criticism from rights groups and international observers.

The inauguration was attended by several African heads of state and foreign dignitaries, with Uganda’s government saying at least 35 leaders had been invited for the high-profile event. Officials described the ceremony as a celebration of stability and continuity, held under the theme “Protecting the gains, making a qualitative leap into high middle income status.”

Museveni first came to power after leading a rebel movement that toppled the previous government in 1986. Over the years, he has overseen constitutional changes that removed presidential term and age limits, allowing him to repeatedly seek re-election despite criticism that he has stayed too long in office.

While supporters credit him with bringing relative stability and economic growth, critics say his extended rule has been characterised by shrinking civic space, heavy-handed security tactics and a lack of meaningful political competition. Many Ugandans, particularly younger voters, have never known another president, fuelling ongoing debates about succession and democratic renewal in the country.

Lower patience contributes to strain in modern marriages – BBNaija Tochi

Big Brother Naija star Tochi has said that lower levels of patience, tolerance and endurance among today’s couples are a major reason many modern marriages are under intense strain. Sharing his views on Instagram, he argued that people of this generation “don’t have the same level of tolerance, patience and endurance our mothers and fathers had.” According to him, many young spouses are now “too woke”, quick to walk away from relationships rather than work through challenges and sacrifices that previous generations accepted as part of marriage. He noted that this mindset, combined with social media pressure and changing values, has made it harder for couples to stay committed when problems arise. Tochi suggested that modern marriages should even operate more like formal contracts, where partners understand clearly the weight of the vows they are taking. In his view, if […]

Mbappé, who recently returned from a hamstring injury, insisted he was fully fit and ready to start the match. “I’m 100% fine. I didn’t play because, for the coach, I’ve been the fourth-choice striker behind (Franco) Mastantuono, Vini and Gonzalo,” he told reporters in the mixed zone. The 27-year-old explained that Arbeloa opted to start Vinícius Júnior and youngster Gonzalo García in attack, with teenage sensation Mastantuono also ahead of him in the pecking order. “I was ready to start, but Arbeloa informed me that I am now the fourth striker. Man City battle fatigue ahead of FA Cup final clash with troubled Chelsea

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City are battling mounting fatigue as they prepare to face a troubled Chelsea side in Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley. City are chasing a domestic cup double while still locked in a tight Premier League title race with Arsenal, leaving the squad stretched by a relentless schedule. Guardiola’s men were in league action as recently as Wednesday, when they beat Crystal Palace 3–0 to close the gap on Arsenal to two points with two games remaining. In contrast, Chelsea have had a full week to rest and train at Cobham, a gap the City boss believes could hand the London club a physical edge at Wembley. “After the FA Cup, we have Bournemouth, we play every three days. Chelsea have a week at home training, preparing the final,” Guardiola said. “We have to travel to […]

Data and recent events show that youth frustration is not just emotional, but grounded in real hardship and broken promises. Nigeria: hustling through crisis In Nigeria, many young people wake up every day thinking about how to survive, not just how to succeed. Chad deports Nigerians fleeing jihadist violence

Chad has arrested and deported hundreds of Nigerians who fled jihadist violence in the Lake Chad region and sought safety in its territory, Nigerian and humanitarian sources say. Many of those affected are from states in northern Nigeria that have endured years of attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups. According to Nigerian officials in Borno State, the Chadian authorities recently rounded up irregular Nigerian migrants in several towns and transported them to the border for return to Nigeria. Local sources say some of those detained had lived in Chad for years after fleeing earlier waves of insurgent attacks and had been surviving through informal work and begging. Humanitarian agencies report that thousands of Nigerians remain displaced around the Lake Chad Basin because of ongoing insecurity and repeated attacks by jihadist groups. Many crossed into neighbouring Chad, Niger and […]

Ghana pulls out of US aid talks over data demand

Ghana has withdrawn from talks on a new United States health aid deal after objecting to US demands for access to sensitive personal health data. The move is a fresh setback for President Donald Trump’s push to link parts of US foreign aid to wider data sharing agreements with partner countries. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the proposed bilateral agreement would have provided about 109 million dollars in US health assistance to Ghana over five years. In return, Ghana would have been required to grant the US extensive access to its national health data systems, including real time information on disease trends and other patient level records. The government of President John Dramani Mahama decided that the conditions posed serious risks to privacy and national security and could breach Ghana’s data protection and health laws. After months […]
