PDP crisis: Wike accuses Turaki, others of flouting court rulings

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and influential Peoples Democratic Party leader, Nyesom Wike, has accused Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and his allies of disregarding clear court rulings in the ongoing PDP leadership crisis. He said the faction has continued to act in open defiance of binding judgments on the party’s disputed convention and national executive. Wike insisted that a series of court decisions, including those of the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, have already settled the questions around the legality of the PDP convention held in Ibadan and the leadership it produced. He accused the Turaki camp of twisting and misrepresenting the judgments to confuse party members and the public. According to him, the Court of Appeal ruling delivered on March 9 upheld an earlier Federal High Court decision that the processes leading to the […]

FCT satellite towns benefiting from Tinubu’s administration — Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says satellite towns across the territory are now benefiting significantly from President Bola Tinubu’s administration through upgraded infrastructure and expanded social services. Speaking on Wednesday after inspecting ongoing projects in Abuja, Wike said federal interventions now extend beyond major roads to education, water supply and healthcare facilities in previously neglected communities. He noted that satellite towns had “never experienced such a level of attention” before now, pointing out that several schools in rural parts of the FCT have been renovated and furnished in the last three years. Wike disclosed that a major satellite water project serving Bwari, Karu and Orozo will be inaugurated to mark President Tinubu’s third anniversary in office, improving access to potable water for thousands of residents. According to him, government is also closing health infrastructure gaps through […]

Police unseal PDP secretariat as factions clash over control

The Nigeria Police Force has reopened the Peoples Democratic Party national secretariat, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, handing control to a faction backed by Minister of the FCT Nyesom Wike. Factional National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed announced the development in a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed on Saturday in Abuja. He said both the secretariat and the party’s presidential campaign office, Legacy House in Maitama, were unsealed in line with valid court orders. According to him, the properties have now been formally handed over to the Mohammed led National Working Committee, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu recognised as National Secretary. Mohammed praised the police for what he described as professionalism and respect for the rule of law, saying the action showed commitment to constitutional order and due process. He warned that the party would not tolerate any obstruction, disruption or […]

IBAN demands apology from Wike over ‘shoot’ remark, threatens boycott

The Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria has demanded a public apology from Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike over his controversial remark about Channels TV anchor Seun Okinbaloye. During a recent live programme, Wike had said that if he could break his TV screen he would “shoot” Okinbaloye over the journalist’s analysis of Nigeria’s democracy, a comment that sparked outrage among media stakeholders. In a statement signed by IBAN chairman Ahmed Ramalan and acting general secretary Fidelis Duker, the association described the minister’s words as inappropriate and capable of being interpreted as a threat or intimidation against journalists. While Wike later clarified that he did not intend physical harm, IBAN said public officials must avoid expressions suggesting violence because they can worsen an already hostile environment for media practitioners who face surveillance, attacks and arbitrary arrests. IBAN has therefore asked […]

INEC Recognises Abdulrahman Mohammed As PDP National Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission has recognised Abdulrahman Mohammed as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party. The recognition follows recent court decisions and the outcome of the party’s latest convention in Abuja. INEC’s position aligns with a Federal High Court judgment which voided the party’s November 16, 2025 convention in Ibadan and affirmed the Abdulrahman led structure. The commission subsequently updated its records to reflect Mohammed and his team as the authorised PDP leadership. At the recent PDP convention, delegates endorsed Abdulrahman Mohammed and a 22 member National Working Committee through a consensus arrangement. The convention was largely driven by a bloc of the party loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Other national officers returned alongside Mohammed include Samuel Anyanwu as national secretary and several deputies and financial officers. Party insiders say the new leadership has been […]

2027: Support for Tinubu deepens rift in PDP

Fresh tension has erupted in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as internal divisions widen over whether the opposition party should back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 or present its own presidential candidate. A faction led by former minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, with the support of Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde, has firmly rejected any plan to adopt Tinubu, insisting it would be “improper” for an opposition party to endorse the flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. The rival camp, aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, is more open to supporting Tinubu and currently backs the National Caretaker Committee organising Sunday’s March 29 national convention in Abuja. This has left the PDP effectively split into two blocs, even as reconciliation talks continue and some court cases are expected to be withdrawn if a political […]

Makinde, Wike camps begin talks to save PDP before 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party says it has pulled back from the brink of a major internal crisis as camps loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike begin reconciliation talks. Party leaders hope the dialogue will stabilise the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. For months, tensions between the two camps spilled into court cases, public exchanges and behind the scenes power struggles, raising doubts about the party’s unity and readiness for future polls. Under growing pressure, both sides are now choosing engagement over confrontation. Speaking in Abuja, factional PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki said the party’s National Working Committee, aligned with the Makinde camp, made the first moves to ease tensions after the intervention of the Board of Trustees led by Senator Adolphus Wabara. He said the BoT set up a […]

Lamido says Wike backed caretaker holds key to PDP reconciliation

Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido says genuine reconciliation in the Peoples Democratic Party depends on leaders accepting the Nyesom Wike backed National Caretaker Committee. He made the appeal during a Ramadan Iftar with PDP executives and members in his hometown, Bamaina. Lamido described the caretaker committee, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, as the only stabilising party structure recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission. He argued that, without first accepting this body, ongoing peace talks between rival camps would not produce lasting unity. The former governor praised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike as a politically shrewd figure who moved quickly when the tenure of the former National Working Committee expired. He said that by the time the NWC’s term elapsed, the only functional national structure left in the party was the caretaker committee backed by Wike. Lamido acknowledged that many PDP members have political […]

FCT poll: Wike free to back any candidate he wants – APC

The All Progressives Congress has defended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s decision to publicly back its candidates in the FCT Area Council elections, saying he has a constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice. The party dismissed opposition criticism of Wike’s role as misplaced and politically motivated. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said on a television programme that Wike, a former Rivers State governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, remains a Nigerian citizen whose freedom of association and expression is guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution. He argued that nothing in the law stops the minister from campaigning for candidates in any party. Morka’s comments followed outrage in the PDP after two of its chairmanship candidates in Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Council stepped down and endorsed APC rivals allegedly after […]
